My husband and I just moved to west ashley. we live in the cypress cove apatments. I would consider these apartments very safe. We have friends who are locals and would agree also.

Wow, AskAngel, what good, common-sense advice. All the apartments you suggested are the ones I would have recommeded AND I like the fact that you promote adopting dogs who need a good home, which in turn provide both companionship and security to their owners.
A few police officers have told me that the #1 deterent for would-be robbers is an indoor dog!

ditto that, stay away from that area... as well as the Orleans Rd area someone mentioned was ok, Savage Rd right behind it used to be one of the worse places in that area... still a ton of baggy pant dope dealers hanging out near there when the sun goes down
Parsonage Apts off of Hwy61 on Parsonage Rd are very safe, my sister lived there by herself for nearly 20 yrs... it's in the Pierpont neighborhood area across from that Piggly Wiggly
stay away from all those apts in Ashley Hall rd too, as well as those on hwy7/Sam Rittenberg Woodmere etc etc
other's gave u good ideas too...
and of course get a dog that sounds large

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this thread. I too am a single girl. I'm moving to Charleston by myself and I don't know anyone in the city either. If you have any advice being that you are in a similar situation, I would love to hear what you have to say!

Yikes! Thanks for the tips about safe neighborhoods! Moving to a high crime city does concern me about Charleston in addition to the fact that main roads leading out of town don't even seem to have breakdown lanes!
Too bad about Maryville! It looks (on the map) like it would be such a convenient place to live -- near shops, the bridge to Charleston, S. Windermere just across Rte 17. Is it really that bad? How about Lenevar, is this bad too?

There's a big difference in renting an apartment in the Concord complex, i.e. 45 Sycamore, and in renting a home in Maryville. Concord itself is a great apartment complex (recently turned condo with units being rented out by the owners). I know plenty of people, single women, men, families etc that live/have lived in Concord and thought it to be a terrific complex, with great amenities, i.e. pool, gym, theater, etc.
Go see it for yourself, if you find the location to be convenient. The only time I got called out there as a police officer was for someone "breaking" into an unlocked car. That kind of crime is going to happen anywhere in the tri-county area.

I keep hearing about concord but I can't find it on any apartment website and nothing comes up in google for it. Can someone help me out with more information about where it is and what the rent is like price wise? Or can someone give me a website so I can look into it more?

I visited Charlestown last winter and stayed at Edisto Beach at a timeshare resort and drove to Charleston every day and tried to check out the whole area with a view to figuring out where I might want to buy a house and live. I drove all around James Island ; found the yacht club, rec center and Folly Beach. Drove around John's Island and went to Kiawah Island and had lunch at the Sanctuary and saw the Angel Oak on the way back. The first day I tried to get the lay of downtown and Mount Pleasant.
I remember being pleased to find a Starbucks in S. Windermere and thinking if I lived near there I could walk to get my coffee in the AM. I crossed over 17 and enterred Maryville and saw signs I'd never seen before in any part of the country forbidding drug use of all things in places where you'd expect no parking signs. I also noticed how unkempt the edge of the river seemed. How SAD! I wonder how S. Windermere can be so expensive being so close to Maryville?
I was hoping some of the subdivisions wouldn't be so closed off from restaurants and grocery stores because I was hoping to live where I could step out my door and walk to town (without having to walk a mile first just to get out of the subdivision). I also want to be near a good qulity upscale grocery store like Whole Foods or Earthfare.
I'd love to live downtown South of Broad but don't want to have to spend every penny I'll have to get a place which I'd probably have to do to live there.
I hope by the time I sell my place and am ready to buy, the perfect house at the perfect price that is within walking distance to shopping will come available.
