Agree, if there was a downtown location, nobody would leave the Peninsula. They've got 24hr Harris Teeter, so they aren't as desperate, hahaha...

BTW, I do love Charleston regardless... Having moved here, I sleep better at night, people say hello, and the weather is terrific!

cheers, melinda
I'm jealous. I'm hoping to move sooner rather than later. I've gotten a lowball offer on my house which I'm tempted to change my mind and accept if it isn't too late. (I also knew about the Harris Teeter but had never been in one so couldn't comment from first hand experience. Saw pictures from their website once and it looked like an upscale kind of place ...without emphasis on natural or organics).

They don't have any stores that carry Chanel nail polish, and I'm aware that's a completely vain statement. A Sephora or Anthropologie would be stellar, but the shops on King Street suffice.

/QUOTE]

Melindaw, have you tried Saks downtown? I would think they would carry the entire Chanel make up and skin care line but I haven't checked it out personally yet. I use Chanel make up myself (their eye shadows got me hooked) and I will have to buy more soon so I will check it out soon enough.

I do feel your pain in regards to missing certain shopping; I lived in Manhattan and Philadelphia before relocating to Summerville, so I was used to access to anything and everything. The only thing I can say is Thank God for the internet! Where else can I use all my high end department store credit cards??

Thumbs up Hmm... Saks..

Well, ya know, I thought about SAK's, but before I drove down, decided to go to the Chanel site (and yes, thank god for our beloved internet). The store locator said that there weren't any stores in Charleston that carried the nail polish. Belk and Dillards used to sell it at the Citadel and Northwoods malls (i checked them out), but the gals at the makeup counter said that they recently stopped selling it because nobody bought the stuff. WAH!

Well, if you feel like a shopping partner on one of your jaunts, feel free to give me a shout, but like you I'm an internet shopper now... I heard through one of the Urban Outfitter employees that a possible Anthropologie store might open in the next year, downtown. I'd kill for a Nordstrom's or Bloomingdales too. Asking for an H&M, ZARA, or FOREVER 21 would be even be asking too much. On the bright side, cannot believe the home prices here! I'm not far from Summerville. My little hood' is called Riverbluff in Whitehall Plantation, just off Dorchester Road and a skip from Ashley Phosphate.

cheers, melinda

WEll folks, Charleston is now SMOKE FREE! YAY!..I have lived here over 20 years in the Mt Pleasant area. It has grown so much so fast that the peaceful village it once was is gone. I am planning to move in the spring to Portland, Or. I can't take all the crappy drivers here not to mention the HORRIBLE HEAT and HUMIDITY!@ I don't know why anyone would want to move here..it stays hot from April through November and sometimes beyond!

Default No, people are still smoking in restaurants...

Hate to burst the bubble, but the restaurants I've popped into, specifically the Cracker Barrel off I-26(sp?). My dad was just in town and he LOVES southern food so one morning we went there (last week, Saturday), and they had a SMOKING section and we all know that smoke doesn't stop at the door because it says it isn't allowed. Smoke drifts no matter what!

So Sunday, dad wanted to go to the Waffle House (ladson rd) (his choice not mine) the guy behind me lights up a cancer stick. I almost lost it right there. I was beyond and beside myself at the sheer audacity that he would think that it's perfectly ok to smoke near someone. I might be pregnant, I could have asthma, or allergies. He didn't seem to care, he needed his fix more than he needed to be concerned about the people around him. Lack of Empathy!

Dunno, I heard you aren't supposed to be smoking, but I think the memo got lost in the mail for many...

That is not Charleston but North Charleston. Two different places. ALL of downtown (city) Charleston is smoke free but the outskirts still allow smoking

Again Ladson Road is not Charleston, it's Summerville/No. Charleston.

They got the memo, unfortunately you got the wrong town ;-) Easy to do if not familiar.

It's coming, slowly. Surfside Beach near Myrtle Beach is smoke free, and Sullivans Island off Charleston also bans smoking. Hilton Head also bans smoking. I heard Mt. Pleasant passed it and it was supposed to go into effect Sept. 1 which means it should be in effect as of this date.

Loved your reply in regards to the smoke-free zones... I just assumed Summerville was a part of the ruling, oops wrong assumption. I'm just south of Ladson, but I have a North Charleston address, so thought it was the same area. Still learning the lay of the (smoke free) land, been here since 09/12/07....

It's not going to run me off though, so far I'm loving Charleston. I sleep better at night without helicopters flying overhead and he sound of sirens blaring every night. The smoke thing, I'll survive, just keep doing yoga and expelling the toxic dust... laughing...

cheers, m

Just visit downtown ;-) Eventually, everyone will go no smoking, but in the meantime support those restaurants that have the policy even without a ban. Leave a little note as to how you'll tell your friends to patronize the restaurant due to their policy. Enjoy Charleston, it's a beautiful city rich in history.
