Hello! We are driving down to Charleston this weekend (FINALLY!!) and we are trying to put together an itinerary. Of course we will be spending time at the beaches, but we are looking for other ideas too. So, for a couple on a budget who only have 4 days to spend there, what are your TOP 3 picks of things to do/see while we are there?
We plan to take a carriage ride through the city and we'd also like to visit Middleton Place. Any other must-see thoughts?
There's plenty to be said for just walking around downtown after the carriage tour and stopping into restaurants, bars and shops, looking at the architecture, etc.
Fort Sumter would be great if you are a history fan...as you probably know, the start of the Civil War began there with a "shot heard 'round the world". And you get a boat ride in and out of the harbor, of course.
The Aquarium is really pretty and right on the Cooper River with great views...a good place if you have interest.
Walking along the waterfront IS a nice way to spend time, and down to the battery area and park, as was mentioned already.
Incredible architecture you will see on the carriage tour, but if you have further interest, some of the homes are open for tours.
Charlestown Landing, where the first English ship landed, is a bit out of the way but interesting and has a walk-through zoo and aviary and a replica ship.
There are also nature tours leaving from Charleston Harbor and off some of the beach marinas.
Not enough time, 4 days!! Have a great time here~

Thanks everyone!! I was wondering if there are any haunted houses that you can take tours through? Someone mentionted that Charleston has a few but I am not aware of any.
We are very interested in the historical museums and such.

I agree that Fort Sumter is a great idea for those visiting.
By the way...the "shot heard 'round the world" is a phrase given to the start of the Revolutionary War not the Civil War.
