Default Weather conditions in Charleston/Summerville area

We currently live in New Mexico but want to relocate in a few years when my husband can retire. I have family in NC but am finding SC information more appealing to me and am doing some research on the Summerville area.

I do have some concerns about the weather. Not heat or humidity, but what the likelihood is of hurricanes, floods, power outages and severe storms in the Charleston area, more specifically in Summerville? Can anyone fill me in on this from their own experience?

Ok, hurricanes- rare. I lived there for eight years and we had two- hurricane Dennis and Floyd, and neither were bad- the only damage we had was during Floyd part of our fence blew over in the back yard, but that was a combo of old fence+rain+wind. But that's one of those things that no one can predict.

As far as floods, power outages, and severe storms, that is pretty much expected during the summer months, however, they are quick- you will have a "severe" thunder storm several times a month BUT they come and go very quickly. The sun will be shining, ten minutes later it will be pouring and 30 minutes later the sun will be shining again. The power will go out a few times, for a few minutes, downtown Charleston will flood for a few hours and then the next morning the sun will be shining and it will be as if nothing happened. Occasionally it will rain for several hours at a time and there will be a little flooding in the streets and in peoples yards, but not so much you cannot continue your daily life.

So, that's my experience.....

Thank you, Rizeninme. What you describe is pretty liveable. Here in New Mexico the monsoon season can bring major downpours that do some serious damage to home interiors. I can deal with a flooded yard but not flooded rooms.
