I was going to say there are already some freight and military ships, who cares?
If anything I feel cruise ships give less of a "industrial feel" But I am from ft. lauderdale and Miami, used to love looking at the cruise ships. They are amazing.
Well said. I say bring em on. I love them and I love the boost to the Chas economy
No the uproar has nothing to do with the pollution from the cruise ships -- visual or otherwise. It is a powerful lobby group that lives in the immediate area surrounding the proposed new terminal. The residents don't want it in their back yard. They don't want the traffic, the people walking around their neighbourhood.
I think a big part of the uproar is over the pollution cruise ships cause. Cargo ships are on a much smaller scale in those regards.
Hate to tell you but the cruise ships have cleaner diesels and less leakage than any of the cargo ships, most are newer and better designed since their cargo is people....

I am not even sure the anti-cruise ship folks live in the immediate area of the present nor proposed terminal but they are downtowners who want less "tourist" types in downtown.
Imagine Charleston without tourists. I can...Georgetown...LOL
In order to have any legitimacy the locals had to engage conservation groups -- it's a common scam. On their own they are too small to affect any change but scream pollution and maybe they have a chance.
I wish that Charleston would embrace its waterfront -- the good, the bad and the ugly. Even the ugly can be 'romanticized'. Toronto has a park on its lake front that captializes on the shipping industry.....they have a park where they have put chairs so folks can sit and watch the ships come and go, being unloaded. It really is a fascinating industry......embrace and celebrate.......Some design genius can incorporate the historic nature of Charleston, the utilitarian nature of some of the waterfront space & our need for park land, pretty areas to enjoy the water........

I honestly would love to take my kid to something like that. I went to a work event at that park near the water, saw 2 ships go buy, that weekend brought wife and kid to watch ships, and nothing
Hell I am trying to figure a train schedule so kid and I can watch the trains near our house go by.
Here's a link to one of the water front parks in Toronto. It is called Sugar Beach because across the street is the Redpath sugar refinery.....what a great space.....Canada
THis whole site is a good one to see what you can do with a waterfront, even with the industrial nature Homepage / Waterfront Toronto

That's all well and good if this is all your shortsightedness allows you to see.
There are several differences between the polution of a cargo ship and a cruise ship. The greatest of which is the waste produced by the amount of people on board.
The ship that docks in Charleston can have as many as 3,500 people aboard. A typical cargo ship? 12-25 crew.
And before you go on, OleTomCat, I am not against the cruise ship industry so long as smart regulations are formulated and followed.
