Are the palm trees in Charleston native? Or were they planted there? They're all over this damn place

As I understand it:

1. The only palm tree native to SC is the Sable Palm as per the state emblem. I have also heard it is a large stalk of grass, versus a "real" tree.

2. Other type palms are imported (Washingtonians as an example) but will grow well in SC, especially along the coast.

3. After Hugo one of the few type trees left standing in the Charleston area were palms so many people started to have them planted.

4. Some say we Yankees have had many planted as we like the southern, warm climate look.

Not sure on any of it.....LOL

they are a native species, go boating and you'll see them all over small islands where people don't go...

but, many of those on the side of the road were trucked in due to the high demand

You would actually think that all palms in the US were imported? I suppose you've never been to California, Florida (even though that's your screen name), or anywhere along the southern border?

actually, I have.

I guess what I meant was the continental U.S... on the assumption that the palms in Charleston were not native- that hundreds and hundreds of years ago they were planted here
