Hi Klipsie! There are some great ones being developed right now. Two that come to mind are the Pines at Gahagan & DelWebb Charleston. Summerville Homes, Pines at Gahagan in Summerville, SC- Pines at Gahagan and delwebb.com. Both are in the beginning stages but are in great locations in Summerville and look to be very inviting.
not to bust anyone's bubble but the gahagan area is built up on an old landfill... never know what's under there and houses have a tendency to "settle" more in places like that
I know this thread is almost three years old, but I need to dispute what meks is saying.
I won't argue that there may have been a landfill somewhere in this area, but I don't think it is directly under The Pines at Gahagan. The acreage was part of an old farm. All you have to do is look at Google Earth, and walk through the neighborhood. Summerville Homes started this developement, but it was taken over by the Apex Real Estate Group, Steve Hill is the builder. The neighborhood is now up and running.
The Google Earth aerial maps can be taken back to the early 1990's, and it is obvious it is a farm in the woods, click on later years with better quality aerial shots and the farmhouse and out buildings are right in the center of what is now the developing over 55 community. It is heavily wooded, many of the trees are huge oaks.
If there is a landfill under those old trees, then I'm pretty confident it is 'settled' by now, after all, a good portion of the most expensive property downtown is on an old landfill. It sure didn't hurt THAT area, now did it?

you aren't disputing it, you are adding to it
it was a landfill long before google earth... lol
just remember these two words, ram jack
my mom's house was built in the 70's West Ashley, her house kept "settling" enough that the brick would seperate every few years
after an underground scope they found out there was an entire house under her house they had bulldozed under decades before she cleared that land and built... they drilled and filled the old house with concrete, problem solved!
btw it was built in an undeveloped area of a neighborhood that looked like an old growth wooded area as well
but have at it, after all google earth says it's a great place!
My husband grew up in Summerville - they used to ride their bikes to the town dump to get parts, etc. He said the town dump was on the south side (far side of Miles Rd.) No where near the 55 and over community off Gahagan Rd. The old cemetery is still located off Gahagan Rd.
I already knew that after asking a couple of elderly, life long Summerville residents, but didn't want to hear the sarcastic remarks that would follow.
I agree that Del Webb is a great place to live, we just wanted to be closer to town, that's all...
You may also want to consider The Elms. There are other communities that don't necessarily require residents to be 55+, but have great appeal to that age group. One that comes to mind is "The Courtyards" in Wescott Plantation.
