Mount Pleasant Schools
Can anyone shed some light, please....I have a kindergartener, who attends a private school here in KY where we currently live as public schools in our area are not very good.
The dilemma is - do we enroll him into a public elementery or do we look for a private school once we move to MP? Does anyone have any thoughts on this subject? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, we are heavily considering moving to MP this summer. I have a kindergartner. What did you decide on schools. I cannot see the responses that you have received on your message so maybe you can copy schools that were recommended. I am leaning towards private school at this time. thanks!

Private schools are always going to be better than government schools. I am not sure which schools are more convient to MP but which ever one you choose it will be better than any of the government schools.
Here is a quick GOOGLE search for private schools in MP.

I have three children -- two in college and one in middle school. I don't believe that private school is always better for the child. I do think for some parents it is the best thing.
Here in the Atlanta area, I have friends who have kids in some of the best private schools. They have the same issues that some of the other parents of students in public schools. If your child is not motivated, doesn't matter how good the school is. I do think that in some cases if your child has learning challenges a private school environment could be a better place for them. THat's just a matter of numbers and consumerism. If you are paying big money -- you have the right to make sure the school is addressing those challenges. I think in the public school system, those challenges can be difficult to address.
My kids have gone to public schools. My sons scored in the top 5-10% in all national tests they have taken through the years, including SAT's. They had some amazing teachers, and they had some not so good ones....but overall -- it was been a positive experience. At the public high school level because of the size of the school there was way more opportunities to challenge them. Private schools are smaller and just don't have the AP class selections, etc....But you have time before you deal with that.
From everything I have heard and read in the last year and a half the Dorchester County 2 school system and the Mount Pleasant school system are more than adequate.
You obviously have education as a priority. Studies have shown that parental concern for education is one of the key criteria for a successful student. Doesn't matter what socio-economic level you are, if you as a parent see education as critical, the student is more likely to be successful in school.
Just as a side note -- I went to a private school all but two years of my life. My high school years, I'm not sure I got the 'best' education but boy did I have fun. Kids in private schools, they do the same things kids in public schools do...trust me on that!!!!.

I have children in Mount Pleasant schools ( I moved her from Florida) I am extremely please with the schools. When you visit to home shop ask for a tour of the schools. See what you think. I recently had a buyer do this, he didn't like one school as much as the other.
I also can post you a list of private/parochial schools if you'd like. I have before.

I thought I read on a previous post (but I can't find it now) that your child can go to any school in the school district you choose. The only thing is if it is not the assigned school for your neighborhood, you may have to provide your own transportation. Am I correct does anyone know? Thanks.

No I don't believe that is true. Because in order to register your child in school you have to show proof of residency. A lot of people are upset right now because there are plans to rezone on of the middle schools and the parents often bought the homes for the newer school and now they ,may be zoned for another school.
Maybe this is true for schools that are not up to standard (NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT)
But call the school district and ask if this is what you have heard.

I wouldn't bank on the policy of being able to go to a school out of district.

I was thinking more along the lines of the attending a different school, but in the same district. Anyway, I just called and you can't do it. I must have remembered wrong what I read.

Barbara you may have heard of someone that did it.
I know here in (Atlanta area), we have had students zoned for other schools in our schools. Sometimes the Principal and school board will make exceptions. The problem with that is one day they can just say no...and you have to switch anyway.
From what I have gathered there isn't that much of a difference in the schools in Mount Pleasant or in the Dorchester 2 District.
