Pleasant because it was too small for me. I agree with Seabass. I like Rivers Avenue with Sports Authority and all the new cool places and things to do there and would drive there before from Mt. Pleasant when I lived there. Are these the same people that want to stop the Cruise ships and 526 completion from happening?

Yes man, you nailed it. Mount Pleasant really isn't a "town" anymore, and hasn't been for a while. The "town" is a city of over 70,000 people, and in fact is the 4th largest city in the state of SC, behind Columbia, Charleston, North Charleston. Yep, population wise, Mt P is bigger than Greenville, Spartanburg, Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill. So they can blame town council and their mayor for selling out to developers and becoming one of SC's biggest cities.

What Mt P people, and downtown snobs, both want is to live in a gated city. Can't do it.

Its just my opinion, and I would not have had it in the 90's, but today I by far prefer the North Charleston area around the airport and mall over Mt P. I'm not a boater, so the water means nothing to me. I'll make my move soon, and keep informing others looking to move to this area of what Mt P is really like compared to other areas.

Oh, have you ever noticed that there is not 1 single buffett restaurant in Mt Pleasant other than Cici's pizza? Not one china buffet. Not one country buffet, or a Ryans or anything. Why?

"Town" council wont give the permit. They made a decision back in 06 to not allow any more buffett restaurants because they didn't like the image it portrayed. Once the Ryans closed, it left Cicis as the only one remaining.

Haha, well, I dont have proof of the shady council deals. It's all word of mouth from locals who "heard it from someone who knows" type stuff. But damn I with Ryans was here.

Well, Seabass, you and I agree on much, but I am a coastal person! I love the water and live 5 mins from it!
I don't like Mt. Pleasant much for another reason:
2 restaurants moved to Mt. Pleasant from downtown. Yo burrito, and Papa Zuzu's. I like both these restuarants. Now, they were self -serve in downtown. Now, in Mt. Pleasant they have servers! They both became fancier! I just liked the self serve (and it saved a little cash too!)
So you see, things are different in Mt. Pleasant!

Seabass, can you tell me more about the prostitution in some neighborhoods... As someone who is moving there in June (with my husband and children)..that statement is a bit concerning to me!

As someone who has friends who may or may not like hookers, please expand on this topic.

Please understand that this one poster's representation of Mt Pleasant is not an accurate portrayal. Mt Pleasant, like any town, is not perfect but it is safe, has great schools, very good neighborhoods, and is filled with nice people. With children, you will love the town recreation dept; it has multiple sports and activities. In addition, the town, while getting a bit crowded for my personal taste, has a huge interest and patronage of local small businesses. I can count on one hand the number of people that did not like it upon moving here.

I am Southern born and raised but I have noticed quite a few transplants here. The most successful are those that embrace the lifestyle, the people here, and never ever try to tell people "the way we did it back home was <fill in the blank>". I truly believe Mt Pleasant is a great place to live. Let me caveat that by saying you must like the suburbia type of feel in order to like it here. Me, I'm a country girl that grew up in Georgia, so I'll be heading back out to the country once the daughter is out of Wando. That being said, I am very happy I chose Mt Pleasant and Wando for my daughter.

Mt Pleasant, Downtown and the islands are in unique positions in that they can choose how they want things developped to a far greater degree than most towns/cities/neighborhoods.

What Mt P has going for it is the highest per capita incomes in the Charleston metro area. And when you see stores going into Mt P as opposed to another area of town that is typically why. North Charleston tends to attract the big box stores because it has the central location, infrastructure/traffic counts and it is home to most of the other big box stores (synergy & competition.) The biggest precendent Mt P set was when they made Lowes stick to the town's review board standards in designing that store. City of Charleston actually took notice of that and started beefing up its comercial corridor review board (ass opposed to BAR which is for downtown) to avoid further suburban hells as typified by Folly Road and Sam Ritt. The vanilla box Lowes/HD that were being built off 61 were what caused them to make the comparo.

And since the entire town is accessed from two bridges & three main roads (really 2) it also offers a higher traffic count along the commercial strip than is typical for a town its size. The road traffic situation can cuts both ways- while posters upthread were throwing out Costco as a likely store it aint't gonna happen in Mt P because it would have to go in too far out ot be feasible for access from other parts of town. And Mt P isn't a large enough population base to score one on its own. This is where the upstate cities' population counts are misleading. Chas/North Chuck/Mt P might be three of the five largest cities but they also physically abut one another. The cities in the upstate are typically ringed with smaller cities/towns and unincorporated that feed into those cities for retail & services.

Hope this is off interest but I'd wager $5 the only purpose this thread is serving is to continue 2-3 posters' multiweek crusade against Mt Pleasant. Which for the record is a supercharged version of suburbia with proximity to a historic city, beaches and waterways. If you don't like upper middle class suburbia you will not like Mt Pleasant & to move there without making that realization is assinine.

Well, a couple years ago the local paper did a story on prostitution arrests. Charleston and North Charleston each had 400-ish or something, as the 2nd and 3rd largest cities in the state. Mount Pleasant had 0. Thats right, 0 arrests for a city of 70,000. Why? Local PD doesn't enforce it. Check Craigslist, its a running joke around here about how many "escorts" you'll find in Mt P. I guess they decided to change it, because recently a lady running a "massage parlor" in one of the high end neighborhoods was busted for prostitution. For years the Russian girls would sit outside the Harris Teeter on H Northcutt Blvd on the swings to pick up the late night drunks, and the south end hotels? Oh my. It's definitely not the Vegas style street level prostitution, not at all. Never seen that here. But online and on the side yeah, but sounds like locals got tired of it and maybe gonna enforce it.

But I must say, its NOTHING like the prostitution in North Charleston at all.
