Sullivan's singing ban is latest effort to chase off visitors | Features | Charleston City Paper

Story is a bit old, but since we've been on the topic of overbearing, big government freedom-crushing rules of East Cooper, why not discuss this one: Sullivan's Island bans singing. Seriously?

Does ANYONE still believe in the freedoms that this country, and to a huge degree THIS CITY, fought for in 1776???

It's almost like some people believe the Bill of Rights includes the "Right to never be annoyed or bothered by anything or anyone".

As noted in the other thread, this is a noise thing, modeled after the code in North Charleston. It's only from 11 pm to 7 am.

The next thing you know the overbearing government will start allowing police officers to slap handcuffed individuals for no other reason than not liking the response they give to questions when asked. The nerve!

This law is aimed at obnoxious drunks as they leave the bars on Sullivan's. Plain & simple.

Maybe Al Cannon could just go over there on the weekends and slap a few drunks around...they wouldn't need this law then, right?

So bottom line is you support a law that literally bans a free citizen from singing???

So they live in a tourist area and are trying to keep the tourists out? Is that the jist of it?

No, they just don't want drunk loud people late at night when they're leaving the bars.

ETA: I wouldn't call Sullivan's Island a tourist areas per se. It's much more residential.

I could be wrong, but I see the entire Charleston area as a tourist location.

ROBYNN, you had it right. The Town of Sullivan's Island gave permits to a bunch of bars and restaurants right in the middle of it's residential area, and they advertise for tourists and locals alike to come spend their money. They then pass laws that ban those same businesses and people from making any noise. Basically, they want their cake, etc.

And Southbel is ok with it. In another thread, she said if her own daughter was arrested by Sullivans Island PD for singing, she'd be ok with it so long as the law was on the books, which it is.
