Tanner Plantation is off of North Rhett, which I believe is a fine area to live in, however there are things that I personally don't like about it.
a) During rush hours, North Rhett gets backed up and it can take you a few minutes to get to I-526.
b) Besides the Bi-Lo and the few other businesses/restaurants in the shopping center there, there's not a whole lot else in a close vicinity. You'll likely have to drive up to Goose Creek to go to Walmart or Mt Pleasant if you're a Target person.
Let's go backwards, shall we? Why are you specifically interested in Hanahan? Have you done research on other neighborhoods as well?

Just to clear up the North Charleston - Dorchester County thing:
I live in the part of Dorchester County that was annexed by the city of North Charleston (not sure when but it was before I moved here). Here is a link to the Wikipedia entry:
I do pay my taxes in Dorchester County, but I also voted last November in the North Charleston City Council and Mayoral elections.
I believe that is also the case for Bulldog.
And yes, there are bad areas in North Charleston just like there are in any good sized city, but there are also many nice areas to live. I have seen posts in the past (although not recently) that have specifically stated "stay away form North Charleston" and I believe that is why some of us that live in the nicer sections of North Charleston occasionally get a little upset when it appears that someone is making a generalization that all of North Charleston is bad.
16.1 miles to Mt Pleasant's Target from Bi-Lo. 13.8 to Summerville's Target. However, depending on the time of day and traffic patterns, it may take less time to get to Mt Pleasant than it does to get to Summerville. Driving down Rivers Ave and University Blvd at 5:30pm is pretty torturous. As long as 526 is clear of wrecks, it'd be much faster getting to Mt P at that hour. Straight interstate as opposed to a bunch of local roads with traffic lights and interstate.
So if we look at North Charleston, Dorchester County is the place to look?
And yes Robynn to answer this question, the Dorchester County part of North Charleston is a nice place to live in my opinion. It is close to Boeing, the Air Force Base, Bosch and situated between Summerville and Charleston.
Hanahan is very small. It has nice older neighborhoods that are quiet. But, the other side of Hanahan on Remount Road (borders North Charleston) is very bad with drugs, prostitution, crimes, and is not nice to walk on the street.
Tanner Plantation is new and very nice and clean with new stores opening around it.
All this talk of prostitution is new to me... kind of scary. I'm used to hearing about more "normal" crimes like murder, rape, thefts, armed robberies, home invasions and etc.
Do you just hear about the prostitution in the news or can you see the ladies walking the streets or what?

I have seen a couple girls in North Charleston that I thought probably were prostitutes, but that's it, and maybe they were just waiting for a cab? I haven't seen any girls out walking around in hot pants and go go boots like you see on television. I have yet to see anyone in either MP, James Island or West Ashley were I thought "Oh, that girl is trolling for a date". I have no doubt that prostitution goes on here, just like everywhere else, but I think some people on here are over exaggerating the problem.
Of course, it's also possible that having grown up in Los Angeles I think all crime problems here are tame because in LA it's so much more "in your face".
I am just telling the person asking that Remount Rd is known for prostitution , drugs, other vice crimes. I was trying to tell the person that side of Hanahan by the Hot Spot and that side is very sketchy. Let me just tell you I know the crime in the area and am familiar with crime in Charleston County. NCPD regularly does stings on that part of Remount Rd. They don't list arrests all the time and have them on the news or newspaper. Parts of Remount are not very safe, but the other side of Hanahan is very nice, quiet , and older homes. Just like most people if you are not looking for trouble on Remount rd you may not see anything, but believe me it is there.
