Charleston is a wonderful place to live:)
Wow Leon,
I hope you get to move back North or West soon. We would rather not have unhappy people like you in town. I was born and raised here and love the area. I have traveled to other countries and all over the US and have not found any other place I would rather live (Yes - I have been to Hawaii, Virgin Islands, Bahamas, California) There is so much history here and Charleston is a beautiful city with some of the top golf courses and beaches. Everyone is very polite, except for a few like you that are transplants. Also downtown has great restaurants and cultural events going on every weekend. I hope the rest of you don't listen to Leon's negative comments and come see the area for yourself.

Moving to Charleston Area from Arizona.
Greetings
I'm going to be moving to Charleston in a few months for work, will be working in North Charleston and wanted to see what everyone thought about where some good areas to live in may be that are not to far from North Charleston.
As for me I'm 32 years old and single, will be making a decent middle management level salary and am looking for a good area where there will be some people around my age, etc. I'm definitely past the party days, and don't really want to be right in the mix of the nightlife, etc. however don't get me wrong though I do like to get out, and live around places where there are things to do, shopping, restaurants, etc. I usually don't prefer to live in the super ritzy areas, however something in between that is still nice and newer however a bit more affordable is usually what I go for. I usually like to be in more of a suburban type area as compared to living in the middle of the City.
Thanks much for your help everyone, and let me know what you think.

Reply to Moving to Charleston From Arizona
It sound like James Island would be a good fit for you. It is only 15 - 20 minutes from Folly Beach, 10 minutes from Downtown Charleston and has some restaurants and people in your age group. What price range are you looking in? Good luck

I found a site with Charleston real estate and the surrounding areas - it appears that a few acres in/near Charleston and the beach is attainable...but its hard to really tell what the listings I am looking at are worth, without having knowlege of the area values.... Need to be able to ride (horses and dirtbikes)
|
We've been vacationing and looking for something similar down there for 5 yrs (We live in an equestrian neighborhood in semi-coastal lg college town in NC on 2 wooded acres and lots of trails.. the dirtbikers and kids with golf carts love them). We'd be lucky to get 400K. (And we don't even have to keep our doors locked at nights.)
Attainable and affordable are two different things in the Charleston area. I've found lots of acreage I'd love to have, but for about the same price as what we'd net selling. Seems we can either afford the house or the land down there.. only one or the other.

Hi relocating mother--if you are still reading these posts, do you mind at all responding to a few of my questions. i currently live in arlington, virginia. we are most likely moving to south carolina and are looking into the mt. pleasant area. I have three young bouys school age and preschool age and I like the whole family type atmopshere. My questions may seem rediculous, but it is a worry of mine. is it really all that humid? We get humidity here for a month or so, but I hear it is supposed to be really bad in Sc and then I have been warned about bugs--fire ants and palmetto roach type bugs--are they everywhere? Thank you so much for responding if you ahve a minute!

Ok, I don't know if she is still keeping up or not but I can answer those questions....
Yes we have fire ants everywhere, but you can treat you yard and run them off.
Yes we have large bugs of all varieties, once again a good exterminator can help there.
Now the Humidity, you say you get about a month of it in Arlington, take your worse month for humidity than add two and a half more months of that and that is our summer...

Hi great 4 boys--If you are still reading these posts, do you mind at all answering a few questions for me. I live in northern virginia--arlington and we are thinking of moving to Mount Pleasant. I have three boys two in elementary school and one in preschool. You obviously have found schools that you like- that was my first question. Being down there now, do you mind sending the names of good elementary schools so I can search for homes in that neighborhood and have you found it to be that much more humid than northen virginia? My last question has to do with the warning of bugs people have been giving me. Have you notice a huge amount of roaches and fire ants? Thank you so much for your time!!! I really appreciate it as I am very nervous about moving, but think that my boys will have a better quality of life there!

thanks Ole Tom Cat--so then are the fire ants on the soccer fields and playgrounds? Everyone seems to love Charleston, do you think that they just get used to the humidity--(can you tell I dislike humidity?)

I spend three months out of the year inside to avoid it myself.....
The other nine months are worth it....
The fields are kept clean of the ants....
