What is the cheapest way to get from downtown Charleston to the beach? It seems crazy that there is no public transportation! I don't own or use a "smart" phone and thus I can't reserve Uber or Lyft. Car services all seems to be "luxury" and therefore quite expensive.

Suggestions?

I looked up the Carta schedule. Carta to Mt Pleasant Town Center (it is not the town center but mall in Mt Pleasant) then use the Carta Beach Reach Shuttle onto Isle of Palms.

They had service onto Folly Beach at one point but it looks like they now end service at the Harris Teeter at Folly Rd/Sol Lagare.

Isle of Palms wouldn't be my first choice of destination, but if it's cheaper by bus/shuttle, maybe it will do! Do they not want tourists on Folly Beach or what?

There are plenty of tourists on Folly. Our metro isn’t well known for public transport.

I suspect trying to fight traffic onto Folly at peak beach hours absolutely kills the bus schedule. Even the one to IOP looked like it was only a shuttle back and forth from Town Center- so if it is delayed it doesn't impact the entire route.

Its also possible that the additional stops went unused when they ran the route all the way to the beach. If so they might have cut them to save $.

Bicycle..It'll take around 1 hour if you maintain ~ 12- 15 mph.

Cheapest, yes. But biking on The JI connector and/or Folly Road is a death wish. Would not recommend!

It's darn near impossible to get a bus to get through the traffic in the summertime on Folly, it would not be able to keep a reliable schedule due to the amount of cars going on and off the island.

There are taxis/cabs, but I have yet to find a reasonably priced one! Too bad some enterprising retiree doesn't buy a van and create a less expensive shuttle service...

But they’d just be stuck in traffic like everyone else.

What you described is Uber/Lyft. Maybe it’s time to join the modern world.
