Husband started his job in October of 2007 -- we didn't finally move into a house until September of 2010. The first couple of years he was alone during the week so he would spend hours driving around, looking at houses, etc. When I would come to Charleston area -- we would do it again...he would leave off the things he knew I wouldn't love. I would look at houses online and he would go scout out the neighborhoods. We drove around and around and around......But I'm glad we did. I'm so happy with our location!!!!

I am SOOOO tired of house hunting!!! We finally decided to build a beautiful home in the Ponds. We looked EVERYWHERE around Charleston. EVERYWHERE. Hmm... Id say for at least 2 years before deciding we would take the plunge and move. We have been actively house hunting for 2 months, made 3 trips down here and have been super disappointed in our search (within our price range of <$400,000). I really wanted to live in MP (close to the beach and downtown), but finally came to the sad conclusion that what we could afford, we did not like. We knew that we would be settling if we choose MP and we did not want to settle. I felt like I was moving down the "house ladder"... into a neighborhood that wasnt as nice as we were used to... SO we finally expanded our search to Summerville and we were pleasantly surprised to see the HUGE difference in the amount of house we could get for our money & nicer neighborhood vs MP. Our experience house hunting in MP: We looked in Charleston National (didnt like because the streets we could afford to buy on were out dated and run down), Park west (didnt like... The streets we could afford were full of cheaply built average homes), Dunes west (didnt like... to strict of a HOA), Brickyard (loved, but the houses we liked were too expensive for our budget), Hamlin plantation (liked but insurance/taxes were to high for our budget & the houses were right on top of each other), Rivertowne (was okay but higher taxes/insurance), Point pleasant (the section with all or mostly brick was okay but the section with the vinyl siding homes was not so great). Overall my husband and I both agreed that for the < $400,000 we had to spend gave us average houses which were pretty cheaply built in MP and for the same amount of money in Summerville, we found a beautiful neighborhood (the ponds) that had "everything" on our list... minus having to drive 45 minutes to the beach. We can definitely deal with the drive! We are happy with our decision. This is our personal opinion and experience with house hunting in Charleston. I hope this helps!

Congrats! The drive to the beach is a pleasant one...we would choose Summerville if it wasn't too far from dh's work...but he's already tired of the drive after a month of renting here...I wouldn't want to do it either. When are you moving?

Macalan,
My impression on MP vs Summerville:
MP has a lot of nice shopping, spread out down hwy 17. Lots of places to eat and once the construction is complete, will be much nicer than it is now. Its not your "typical" beach town. Its a long town... and you drive for miles to get through it. About 10-20 minutes from the beach and about the same to the historic district. Calm and laid back.
Summerville also has the same long road that runs through it... hwy 17. How ironic, huh? It has some newer shopping in the beginning, right off the highway. Dicks, walmart, target, kohls, tj max, movie theater, lowes, cracker barrel, wasabi, etc... as you drive through, you go through some industrial areas of summerville (not so great) and then you get to the quaint "historic district". It has the older stores and lots of old oak trees. As you drive you will see the oak trees, lots of big southern houses, the elementary school, etc... Some nice areas, some not so great areas. Its a typical small town, which has expanded on the population size over the past few years. As you drive down 17, you will come to "the end" of summerville, where the ponds neighborhood is, then you will see dorchester road. That road also has a few stores, walmart, etc... LOTS of old trees in summerville. Lots of older homes... that give it the southern charm.
In comparison, I would say that Mount Pleasant is much newer than summerville... but as summerville grows, so will the stores and such. Both have great schools, both have nice neighborhoods. Its definitely a personal preference on which you like better.
Summerville- more country, farther from beach/historic dist, less expensive, nicer homes for your money
MP- closer to beach, closer to historic dist, very expensive to live, higher taxes, higher insurance. Not as nice of a house for your money.
Hope this helps you.

Robynn, We are moving at the end of June, beginning of July. I am so excited. Cant wait!! We visited the design center today and choose everything we wanted in our new home. Double porches, 3600 sq ft and almost a 1/2 acre. Im so thrilled and cannot wait to get moved and unpacked.
