Thank you so much for all of the feedback! Boof1199 and kdann make very good points. Since I'll be starting out in an apartment, it would make sense to check out mt. pleasant first. The exact demographics don't matter as much as the overall picture. I grew up in a neighborhood that was all black. If a person of any other ethnic background drove by, we knew they were lost. Luckily my parents exposed me to different areas around Chicago and I was able to meet many different types of people. Living in NY for four years really helped broadened my horizons as well. I guess I just want that for my son. I don't want to limit him to be around peole who are like us, but I don't want him to be the only black kid in school either. I have a nephew and niece going through that now and they're miserable.
Seems like most of the surrounding towns can give me the diversity (be it race or economic) that I'm looking for. Besides that I look forward to being proximal to the water, in a good, safe neighborhood. I'm a history buff, so I can't wait to get to the museums and such.
Some time ago, I ws looking into Thickett apts in Mt. Pleasant. Any info on good apartments that are kid-friendly? Any good apts in West Ashley?

just to clarify the typo in my last post, it should have read, "I don't want to limit him to only being around people who are like us".

Pleasant has what I'm looking for? Also, I'm looking for a job as a Registered Nurse. I currently live about 56 miles south of Chicago and there is a HUGE nursing shortage here for. I've been researching nursing jobs in SC for new grads-I've even contacted a few area hospitals- but things don't seem to be too promising down there jobwise. I'd appeciate any responses. Thanks!

Nursing shortage is bad in Suffolk, VA, they pay well here. You would like Suffolk, VA.

thanks for the advice bharrod, but I seem to be drawn to SC. Maybe I've read too many Pat Conroy novels...

Some apartments have undergone a conversion into condos, so it is difficult for me to tell you the best places. However, there are a few that I remember. Here they are (be sure to do a Google search on these complexes):
- Castlewood Townhouses
- Middleton Cove (one of my wife's best friends lives there and loves it)
- Plantation Apartments
- Village Square Apts
- Moss Creek Apts
- Cypress Cove Apts
- Hampton Pointe Apts
- The Palms
