Default Move from Charlotte, NC to Mt. Pleasant, SC

We are considering a move from Charlotte NC to Mt. Pleasant this summer. We are originally from NYC and have vacationed in the Charleston area for many years. We love to visit but know living there will be quite different. Looking for information regarding schools and neighborhoods. The schools we're considering are Bishop England High School in Daniel Island and Christ Our King-Stella Maris. We would be transferring a son to high school as a junior so wanted to know how hard the transition would be (ie whether the kids there have been together since kindergarten or whether there are many transplants). Also, we are considering I'On and love Old Village area - ideally, we'd love to be near/on water. Any advice? Thanks!

Tracy Mt. Pleasant is absolutely full of transplants so I think your children would have no problem fitting into either school that you mentioned. Both schools are excellent as far as I have been told. I think your family would be happy here. Charleston is a wonderful place to live.

How about some HELPFUL posts people.

I'm curious about DI schools as well...if anyone has any input.

Living in I'on would put your son at Wando, which is very highly rated - I've heard/read nothing but good things. It's a very big school though - over 3 thousand students (all of Mt. Pleasant attends).

Mainly one is large and public (Wando) one is smaller, private and Catholic (Bishop). As of 2011, Wando ranks 9th and Bishop ranks 43rd (out of 209 high schools).

Good luck with your move!

lots of transplants so the kids should be just fine adjusting. check out DI, its paradise.... we've been there for 3 years and don't ever plan to leave. Don't pay any mind bulldog's posts. He's just trying to rile up some of the others who are on here a good bit.

Christ Our King is the feeder Catholic school into Bishop England. However, if it's just a matter of a good school and you're not specifically wanting a Catholic school, Wando would fit the bill as well and frankly, I think is a better school. Once you go to Porter Gaud and Ashley Hall (girl's school), then you're looking at private schools that exceed Wando.

As for neighborhoods: spacious Old Village or I'on ... ? Both lovely as a whole to look at, but sooooo different in outdoor living space. That's obvious from just a drive through ... so what's on your wish list?

Tracy, most of your concerns can be dealt with very easily. Mount Pleasant does indeed have a large number of transplants, and I don't think your children would have any troubles adjusting. I'd even go so far as to say that many of the high school students they run into are going to have only been local a few years themselves. It just seems that way, the first statement s "hi I'm so and so", then "where are you from?" follows immediately after that. I recommend coming down during the school year and touring the school facilities while school is in session. I would even check and see if any have shadow programs, where your child can pair up with a student for the day and follow them around, attend classes, etc.

Mount Pleasant and Daniel Island are both fantastic areas of the low country, and the neighborhoods you've mentioned are simply stunning. I love being near the water myself, and any chance I ever get to move closer to it, I will.

Old Village in Mt. P. would certainly fit the bill for what you're looking for. But I wouldn't rule out other neighborhoods in Mt. Pleasant that could potentially put you on a tidal creek, or deep water dock, if that's your preference.
