So how come there is no Jazz radio station in Charleston?
You would think with a big arts festival like Spoleto, there would at least be a Jazz station.

I asked about a jazz station when I moved a yr ago...surprised-not even one!

Now I stream jazz through my laptop. There are a large no. of jazz stations across the country...you can stream live radio jazz or pre-recorded. I use NPR.org...you can stream ANYTHING, Celtic, Rock, Classical etc.

I just wish the speakers on my LT were near in sound to my Bose.

That's one of the reasons I recently purchased an XM radio for my car. Now I have all the jazz I want, and can listen to any type of format. It's fantastic!

Commercial radio nowadays is being taken over by corporate comglomerates like Clear Channel and it will never be the same. It's all based on ratings and instant profitability. Jazz is simply not going to get the ratings they are looking for in a smaller sized market like Charleston. You are seeing more stations convert to safe, popular formats like country (do we really need 3 country stations in Charleston from 3 different corporations?) and less local announcers. I used to work in radio and I am saddened to see how corporate it has become. Very few locally owned mom & pop stations left anymore. Radio is dying a slow death, unfortunately.

We created a bunch of great jazz stations on Pandora and play them through the phone in the car. Such a great, free app!

There is a pretty vibrant live jazz community in town. It's been a while, but I dug up some nice resources on it. When I get to live there full time I'll be hanging around those venues
