Are you opposed to bad neighborhoods? Because for that kind of cash I'm thinking, north of crosstown / east of I-26.

These are all very nice, newer apartments that I think you would enjoy living in. These aren't necessarily 'close' to downtown, but they are only 10-20minutes away.

Scuba Steve, this is just bad information. There are plenty of rentals around that the OP could find in her price range that isn't in a bad neighborhood.

The OP said home or nice townhome, near downtown, not too far a drive. Apartments aren't home (single family home, in my opinion) or a townhome (condo/attached home that someone is leasing out IMO). I interpret the requirements as excluding apartments and roommate situations.

Our definitions of "too far a drive" differ greatly too because IMO the places on Dorchester are nowhere near downtown. Google Maps puts it at 30 minutes.

At 800/month + single family attached/detached the best shot making the "close" requirement will be in 29412 (James Island), but SFD/SFA is still a challenge. At that point one of three requirements have to be relaxed - "close," nice, or apartment. 29403 has a few that may not be nice but are close and townhome (duplex)... obviously the places up Dorchester are nice but not close and are apartment. It's really a matter of the OP managing their three constraints - dwelling type, location, and niceness, and understanding that they need to be flexible with one or more of them.

I make that drive at least twice a day and I can tell you unconditionally that the drive is 15-20minutes TOPS.

'Close' is relative and I'm sorry to hear that anything outside of 5 minutes isn't 'close' to you. Must make life hard.

In my experience people tend to exclude apartments in their search because of stereotypical opinions about them. In the cases of the ones I listed above (and many others) these are not your grandfather's apartments where everything is run down and falling apart. These are exceptionally nice communities well suited for comfortable, affordable living.

And I won't even get into your suggestion that the OP will have to live in a 'bad' neighborhood in a very specific area to find the price range.
