I may have a job opportunity working within the athletics department at The Citadel. I would like to know good areas for apartments either near the Citadel or "downtown" Charleston. I've never been to this city before and don't know what is pricy, where crime is high, etc. I'm from the south side of Chicago and could be moving down there. Don't know yet, but want to ask first of all. I assume if I did get the job I'd be making 35K/year.

You can not live in downtown Charleston on 35K a year without a roommate.

Look out around West Ashely, there is a thread on here by an upstate mom that just moved her son down here, she did a really thorough review of a bunch of the apartment complexes around town...

I guess I would just like to actually live in a downtown area where I can walk everywhere as opposed to driving. I've lived in the suburbs of Chicago and Charlotte all my life and was tired of driving to get downtown. I guess it was a bit of a pipe dream to expect living downtown on that salary. With that being said, where is a good spot to reside with things to do for a single, 23 year old?
