We've (well one of us) has lived there since April. I've not seen a single one, and the child bride has not mentioned it once.
We're in WA right next to the woods
Even I think that's kind of strange.

Ha! We do have a gator though

They kind of freak you out the first couple of times you see them, but you do get used to them. I haven't had one in the house for months. They are everywhere outside in the warm weather. When I first moved here I would run from them outside. I still don't like them, but I don't freak *as much* anymore. When they get in the house I spray them with home defense, beat them with a broom, and then sweep them outside.

Palmetto Bugs (or roaches as everyone outside Charleston calls them) are everywhere .. they are not concentrated in North Charleston any more than they are in any other part of the state.

They call them Palmetto Bugs around here because they are too good to have a cockroach in their house .. lol.

Still trips me out even after living here 13+ years.

When we moved into our home 2 years ago they were everywhere in the house. Maybe because the house had been vacant for awhile. I had the "heebie-jeebies" until we got an exterminator out, I still don't like them, but at least I don't freak out anymore.

I have lived in FL my whole life and here for two years, yes they are around and you see them. But I never have had them in my house except for maybe finding one every 1-2 years.

I have seen them outdoors plenty of times. Never seen them as an issue, actually flies seem to be the nuisance bug around here.

Oh hush Tom. I call them Palmento bugs because they don't look anything like the roaches I saw growing up in Southern California. These things are Jurassic gigantic beasts in comparison! I'm not the kind of girl to squeal over bugs or anything but I have to be honest, I don't walk around outside in the evening barefoot very much on the off chance that I might step on one of those things. Ick

Thats funny you say this. I was born and raised in downtown Charleston and I never called a roach a "Palmetto bug" and neither did anyone I know. We always called them cockroaches. I rarely heard the term Palmetto bug.

I think us northerners adopted the term palmetto bug to help us feel better. We live in an apt on DI and I have to say, we see one about every 3-4 days. I don't know why we see them here more than anyone else that I ask on this forum..maybe because it's an apt. They freak me out but not as bad as new England cockroaches. They are disgusting!
