Georgetown
Hello, I have been considering relocation to Georgetown and have been there several times by car and by boat. Looking for any info as to quality of life, growth that is planned, the paper mill, road construction planned, development planned, housing prices and what's going on with the real estate market there. Any racial problems or tensions? From my own experience, the people I have met in Georgetown have been very friendly and the area looks good, but of course, local people always know what's going on both good and bad.
Thanks,
Brad

Hi Brad,
I think since Charleston is nearly twice as far away from Georgetown than Myrtle Beach is, you'd get a better response from the Myrtle Beach forum.
On the other hand....maybe not, since I just checked and their isn't one. But Myrtle Beach questions seemed to be posted in the South Carolina Section. You might want to also post your question there and maybe a Myrtle Beach realtor who also handles Georgetown will answer it.

Some of my family lives in G'town. A majority of them work at the paper mill. Some travel to work near Huger to work at NUCOR STEEL.
G'town is a small area but the best thing about it would be that you are right in the middle of MB and Charleston!

I'm not a local, but just spent a really enjoyable weekend in G'town at the Wooden Boat Show. Found the people friendly and charming, and loved the boardwalk and the wonderful flowers everywhere. Had a memorable meal at the River Room.
A local G'town couple we know said a big issue is the possible development of a marina on the Black River, which is a 150 mile long pristine river. I found it encouraging that there is a great deal of interest and activity to fight this development and to protect the river.
There is, admittedly, a whiff of papermill scent in the downtown area, but given the town's charm and its boating potential (though 14 miles to open ocean), I think I could live there quite happily.
The many streets with huge oaks meeting overhead to form arches is very special. And the historic district is wonderful. I liked this town a lot. Hospitable without an attitude.

I wish Georgetown was closer to Charleston and also didn't have the paper mill smells because it sounds like it is much more of a sailing town and I love to sail and real estate is better priced. However due to the smells and the lack of a lot else to do in Georgetown, I'm choosing Charleston. I'll make the drive to Georgetown for the boat shows.

Georgetown is a nice town & if I didn't have kids I would have considered moving there. The county of Georgetown is about to explode in the next few years. There are a couple of major developments going through the approval process that will almost double the population. One is called Crown Pointe (broken link), in the vicinity of Rte 701 & 51.
There are some nice communities south of Georgetown in the Belle Isle & South Island with access to some great sailing & fishing areas. You would be less than hour to Charleston from this section, too.
Georgetown Times website for those who want to check in on the local news & classified ads.
BTW, If you posted your info request on the regular SC forum you may have a better response.
