It is a big deal. I'm not sure I would lay all the blame on Haley's feet... there's a lot of decision points between the Gov's office and protection/cause of the breach. But to say it's not a big deal is absurd.
Oh, and sorry for my weirdly worded post above... that's what you get posting from a phone.
She also answered again a question many parents have. Their children's names and Social Security numbers are on the parents' tax returns, so how are the children protected? The governor says when a parent signs up for the credit monitoring service, Experian, the company providing the service, will also cover any minor children on that parent's tax return.
Minor is under 18 right? Hmm was thinking my children over 18 would be covered -- maybe not. See -- not clear. I'll sign them up anyways. I'm paying for the service, I might as well get it.

You need to sign EVERYONE who is on your tax return up for this individually, get each person with a SS# their own separate account...
Didn't blame Haley for the breach, just don't like the way she kept saying it was no big deal.
What?! She said it was a bad day in SC and has held several press conferences. As a leader you don't find a way to neg. a year's worth of credit monitoring and a lifetime of fraud restoration if you didn't think it was a big deal. I've not gotten the impression that she is minimizing the risks or that she thinks it is no big deal. She even said it was a sophisticated breach.
Heard today on the news that the first lawsuit has been filed related to the computer hacking. Expect more to come. It will be interesting to watch this and see if the people filing suit are successful...
Also heard that the state chose NOT to use the encryption for the data when it was available to them. INEXCUSABLE.

That would be on your dime. The state is paying for coverage as linked on your tax return. If you opt for individual coverage outside of that then you pay for it on your own.
Well I used the code and signed up my 22 year old son who is a dependent. It isn't clear what they are doing.
