More Summerville Questions
Hi-
My husband, daughter, and I are looking into relocating from a town near Rochester NY to Summerville, SC.
My husband is currently a truck driver/heavy equipment operator and part-time fish taxidermist. Are there many local delivery trucking, heavy equipment, marina/charter boat, taxidermy etc type jobs available in the Charleston area and where is a good place to look? What are salaries like in these areas?
We are looking at renting a home in some of the Summerville developments...are there any developments or areas that we should try to avoid? We want something we can afford around $900/month but isn't run down or unsafe.
How is the cost of gas currently, electric, high speed internet, dish, phone, etc?
I have read that there is a Publix, Walgreens, and Target in Summerville...what other stores are in Summerville? What businesses are downtown? Are there any help programs for starting a small business in town? Would handmade soy candle, craft, gift store do well in this area?
Is there any fleamarkets/antique stores in the area?
Also, I have Crohn's disease and am looking for some references for a good gastroenterologist, primary care doctor and pediatrician that is accepting new patients in the area.
Thanks for any info

I live in the Summerville area, but unfortunately, can't help you with salary info. All I can tell you about trucking is there's a Southeastern Trucking plant, ECMD (ecmdjobs.com), and Wilson trucking, all just outside of Summerville.
As for stores, all the ones you mentioned are there, as well as Kohl's, Belk, Shoe Department, Sears Grand...the list goes on. There are also many locally owned shops unique to the area. There is a large flea market open on the weekends in Ladson (not far from Summerville). Also, downtown Charleston has a large "market" with lots of original crafts and artwork. I personally love craft stores and I think they do well here. Downtown Summerville is full of crafty stores. Also, there is the annual Flowertown Festival which is really nothing but a HUGE craft sale!
I know I didn't answer all questions, but I hope this helped some.

I, too, am planning on moving to the Summerville area. Would like to hear from retirees in the Legend Oaks area. What activities are available there? Is there a Newcomer's club or Welcome Wagon Club, Red Hatter's?

Hi Pat,
I'm a retiree in Legend Oaks Plantation and I've been to Wyboo as well.
BIG difference.
There's just about everything you need here. If we don't have it on premises, we know where to find it.
I can have the social committee people contact you if you like.

Yes, I would be interested in any info that you have regarding Legend Oaks. Can you tell me the going rate for golf? Is the course difficult? I appreciate your taking the time to familiarize us with the community. Thanks.

The course is laid out very well. A lot of risk/reward shots. I shoot low 90's and my wife shoots low 120's . We can both play the course and it's easy enough for her & tough enough for me. That's hard to find these days, it's typically one or the other.
We have a VIP club that anyone can join. Rates are around $25 w/ cart.
Summerville, SC - Legend Oaks Golf Club - Golf Charleston, South Carolina in the Low Country
As far as housing, we have just about everything from the $160's to over $800k.

A good friend of mine lives in Legend Oaks on the golf course. Her home gets hit pretty regularly with golf balls but a few weeks ago a guy tee'd off her deck.

That's just poor home searching. ALWAYS check the siding of your home & your neighbors while scouting locations.
But;
Never buy on the slice side unless you are within 100 yards to the green,
Never buy between 175 & 250 yards from the tee box,
Try not to buy directly off the green & tee. (Cursing seems to erupt at the worst times)
Try to get a buffer.
It's the same for all golf courses!
