I am not a rush hour guru, but I have heard it said that it usually takes an hour to get from Summerville to North Charleston in the morning. I got caught in early rush hour traffic at 2:30 on Friday afternoon and it took me an hour to get from the Airport area of North Charleston to Ladson road in Summerville. Every day, and I mean every day I have had to travel that corridor there has been an accident and some sort of a bottle neck... Sometimes in both directions. The is no real mass tranisit to speak of and commuting must sucks the big one. One guy I know who lived in mount pleasant and moved because it took 15-20 minutes just to make a right turn!
The local governments really need to get light rail, park and ride lots, bus and carpool lanes and direct routes from community to community and improve CARTA's service! A bike would be a great way to get around except many roads are too narrow and inconsiderate drivers scare the daylights out of you. Wider roads with bike lanes are a must.
In my opinion building roads is only a temporary band aid solution. The problem is you have 3 different counties and many different communities that have a direct role to play. Many municipal governments have problems getting things done within their own community, much let alone when they have to coordinate things with other municipal governments. An absolute nightmare I tells ya!

Default commute

Plan for a long hall. It can go over an hour. Our neighbor learned spanish from tapes on her commute. There is just no good way downtown. this area has something the taxi drivers call the 5 fingers, ashley river rd, dorchester, I26, rivers ave, and N rhett. From those areas you are guarenteed to end up on one of them.
N rhett is the "road less traveled" because it has limited access. sshhh!!! If you can get a place near there you can shorten your commute and avoid the disaster which is the I26/526 interchange. Places like Tanner Plantation, Laurel Hills, Liberty Hall, Brickhope all have easy access to N rhett. also if you want to go to the beach you can pick up 526 after the aforementioned interchange and scoot to IOP. I can get there in less than a half hour.

From Summerville it's also about an hour. It depends on what specific area you are coming from, but an hour is about right.

Husband is renting an apartment in Summerville and works downtown Charleston. We were thinking of Summerville but it has been knocked off our radar. We aren't new to traffic issues, we are from Atlanta area and there is traffic everywhere an hour outside Atlanta. My husband says the commute is just too long and it is only going to get worse.

Just our opinion.....

Traffic is definately going to get worse in the next five year's with all of the developments that are being built all over Dorchester and Berkeley counties.

Pretty simple math folks:

Closer to downtown = more $$$
Closer to beach = more $$$

It just so happens that being closer to downtown also means being closer to the beach.

Your Realtor should know exactly which areas are going up along that graph.
It changes weekly depending on local politics. Downtown & the ocean, in general, hasn't moved for years (although IOP begs to differ).

I-26 is being widened to eight lanes from the Mark Clark to Ashley Phosphate Road. Construction is supposed to start in the spring. This should help ease the daily congestion in that area.
