I'm 26 from upstate ny, I'm now moving to sc this Aug. I know that we are highly thinking of the charleston area, like mount Pleasant. I was wondering if anyone can please give me some advice on the town and charleston itself.

There are three people including myself, I personally have a four year degree in business and technology management. I is the job market good?? Is the crime rate low or high?? What do people normally pay for rent??

The entire reason why I'm thinking mount Pleasant is because I heard it's a nice area, beach, water, and about 15-20 mins away from charleston. I have a few other questions as to what people normally make down there??we are all in our mid to late 20s.

Plsase any kind of feedback will be amazing help. We plan to make the move in late August. We just want some really good information first.

Please and thank you for your help.

- Paul

Paul,

Thanks for your interest in Charleston--you made the right choice! I just recently made the same decision and moved here from Atlanta, GA. I reside in Mt. Pleasant and think it was the best choice I could've ever made. The location is prime (I clocked it today, and I am just 4.9 miles to the beach) and a quick 15 minutes to historic downtown Charleston. I came from Atlanta where everyone has the go, go, go attitude and already since being here I just feel calmer/happier/more relaxed.

In regards to rental cost expectations, it depends on what you are looking for. The townhome I rent is $1,000/mo. which gets me 3-bedrooms and convenient to everything. From my research before I moved, the crime rate here is relatively low (it just depends WHERE you are comparing it to). For me, coming from an urban locale, this is extremely lower in regards to crime--let's just say the evening news is less depressing here :-)

I can't comment on what you should expect to make for an income, because I am in the health/medical field, so our fields may net much different cash.

Good luck with your search!

Hi Paul,

If you're moving here without a job already set up, get started looking! Charleston's unemployment rate is around 6.3% right now, and there are lots of people in all the industries (health, technology, arts, tourism/service to name a few) who are looking for work. And, it seems to be a town that loves supporting its local recent graduates. So, there's a lot of competition.

Here are a few great sites that you should keep your eyes on:

CDC : Talent Portal
Charleston Works
https://www.blackbaud.com/careers

As for where you should be, if you have a car then MP or West Ashley have some great areas for your age, as does the downtown area called Cannonborough, tho it's a lot of college kids in that area.

If you have a NYC comparative salary, now, cut about 1/4-1/3 off it for what you should expect to make here.

Good luck!
