Default Best Spot for Oysters

Hey Everybody,

I'm a Sandlapper by birth and breeding, but have been away for quite a while now. I'm looking for a really great place in the Charleston area for oysters.

Someplace fresh and good. It doesn't need to be fancy. In fact, the less fancy the better, as far as I'm concerned. Some place where I can get my hands dirty and do a little shuckin'.

Thoughts?

If it's a place you don't want to broadcast to the world for fear of letting it no longer be your best-kept secret, you can send it in a direct message.

Thanks in advance!

It's been awhile, Gilligan's Steamer and Raw Bar was pretty good last time I was there. I haven't had my oyster fix yet this year, now you've gone and made me hungry. I'll have to update this in a day or two.

My Favorite spot is for Oysters is at RED'S Ice house on Shem Creek Mt. Pleasant. They have specials every so often where you get a bucket for $7 along with beer specials. It is perfect for your tastes, it is an outdoor type bar on the water with an upstairs crows nest. You can even bring your dog with you. There isn't even a hint of pretentiousness or fancy at this place. It is just a great place for the average Joe. Also, In the evening you can spot Dolphins hanging around the fishing boats. I find that pretty neat.

Yes, Red's is one of my favorite places to go out with friends/family. I hadn't had the buckets of oysters in awhile though, thanks for the reminder.

Beautiful. Keep 'em coming!

As you can see from my username, I'm a LONG way from fresh oysters, but I'll be down for Thanksgiving in just a few weeks. Time to kill a craving.

If you're willing to get your hands dirty and have an experience, go to Bowens Island on the way to Folly Beach.

Default Red's Ice House

I thought that the forum members might like to see a few photos of Red's that I took not long ago.

Yeah, RED'S Ice house is something out of a Jimmy Buffett song. On the far left of USC Joe's pictures you can see the Crow's nest.

C'mon folks.

I'm a Yankee, born & bred on clams, picked them out of the bay with my feet, have the scars to prove it. Yet, I now consider them the lacking cousin of the oyster.
I have seen the light...

For "roll up your sleeves Oysters", it's a real back yard over real wood oyster steam/roast. Special coat to keep warm & your own knife. We are about a month or two away from that very special time down here.

Barring that, I'll go with the Noisy Oyster (Downtown) around 5 PM.
The garage doors are open; the sun is streaming in; a game may be on; the oysters and beer are damn near free; & you get to pick raw or steamed. Two of each will do you up just fine.

Beyond that;
BOWEN's RULES! Thank God for the Phoenix rising from the ashes.

Want to meet for Oysters at Noisy? I'm in.
