This is the way we go when we go back up north or to DC & Va.....
But you have two major cities, Columbia and Charlotte, once you are past Charlotte going North on 77 it is a breeze all the way up....
Coming down from N. Va you will hit Charlotte first then I77 ends on the East side of Columbia where it merges with I26 for a nice 1.5 hour ride to Charleston...
I forgot about Charlotte. You're right though. Still, it isn't bad. If I leave early enough, I can get passed Charlotte before the morning rush and then it's an hour and a half to Virginia and some truly breath taking scenery.

There are also a few fun places to stop along the Shannandoah Valley....
OP here - Thanks for all of your input! We have decided that Labor Day may be the better choice. Less crowded and hopefully not as humid as July for our 1 year old son are the main reasons for choosing September.
I really liked the suggestion of taking I-81, instead of I-95. We live in eastern Loudoun County, so we are only 45 minutes from I-81.

It's a coastal city and the temperature won't be a whole lot lower in early September than it is in early July so don't bet all the money in your bank account that you'll escape humidity by coming Labor Day weekend.
You will definitely enjoy the 81/77/26 route more than the 95 26 route.
