Good Afternoon everyone! We are in the process of making the move to Charleston. I am currently an Elementary School Teacher with 10 years experience in a low income school district.
I have my application in to a few schools in the Charleston School District, however, I have many questions!!
If anyone has any info I would appreciate it greatly!!
------
Are most of the schools old or new? Do they have Blackboards or Whiteboards?
How is "good" is the technology in the classroom? Smartboards?
Do most schools have a stipend for the teachers to buy supplies, or is it all teachers' responsibility?
What is the general ratio of students to teachers?
These are good for a start, Thank you in advance!!

I don't know all the answers but I can provide some.
Whiteboards
Every classroom has Smartboards - that was an initiative from a few years ago.
Every classroom has computers.
No idea on stipends
Ratio is dependent on school - expect about 25:1 though.
In the Charleston area, you will find both old and new schools in every district. Similarly, technology will differ school to school and district to district. Ratio of students to teachers also differs. I am not sure about the supply thing...it wouldn't be via the school, though...it would be a district thing.
You should apply to that private school on John's Island. They seem more laid back there, almost like a college experience for the kids. Would be a fun place to work I think.
Thank you all for your input! I am happy to hear about the smartboards, 25 is a fair number too.. I had 33 last year and 28 this year...
It might be that many though. There are some schools in our area which are quite crowded. There's some talk about redrawing attendance lines in Mt P but it has not been released yet. The rest of Charleston County is hit or miss, depending on which school.
However, even the older schools have been retrofitted with all the same technology.
I just hope the redrawing of lines will not effect my area... One of the main reasons we are moving to Mt.P is for the schools.
All of the schools in Mt P are excellent so even if it does, your child will still attend an excellent school. It is supposed to be released this summer I believe.
