Default Walkable, fun area in Charleston for couple in 40's

We're in our early 40's and about to be empty nesters. We're seriously considering Charleston -- looking for a city with character, lots of outdoor possibilities and a southern climate. For the first sixth months at least, we want to rent while we get the lay of the land. For reasons of price (we're paying for college soon!) and environment, we'd like to find an apartment in an area of Charleston that's easily walkable/bikable, safe and also within the $700-1000 range per month (and we're willing to live pretty small, even in a studio). Any ideas? Thanks a bunch!!!

Ideas are;
Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island & Summerville proper.

Especially Daniel Island I think.

Is there a particular reason to recommend Daniel Island?

Early 40's empty nesters = activities.
Daniels Island has them all, walking, bikes, tennis, golf, restaurants, all with a planned small town feel.

Quick run to downtown & Mt P for shopping, just off the interstate.

Yeah but can they do Daniel Island for $1000 per month or less? Daniel Island seems pretty expensive to me.

Default <$1000 in Daniel Island

Right now there are several 1 & 2 BR units available under $1000. Not bad for DI!

I've got eight units under $1,100 right now.
DI is expensive, but sometimes, you get what you pay for...
