Pretty odd to be the third largest city in the state without a real downtown area.

Park Circle. There's your downtown.

It's a relatively young town and didn't really have a traditional downtown like most...I suppose.

The "original downtown" of all of Charleston was in North Charleston on Montague Ave where all the restuarants and bars are now. Originally, this was downtown Charleston. Aunt Bea's was there, and recently closed (sadly) a year ago.
It really is pretty cool even if you go down there now on the weekend. It is busy, lots of people , and seems like a cool place to hang out. There are many new restuarants and shops, and last time I went it was very busy on the weekend with people. I don't consider this Park Circle, but know you know this was the original downtown of all Charleston.

The Park Circle area was not even laid out until the mid-1910s.

So Charleston proper didn't have a downtown area for its first 250 years?

Thanks for the history lesson...I can't wait to start educating others.

Where in the world did you get that info? That area wasn't even incorporated until the 1970s. That's like saying Cross is the original downtown Moncks Corner when it isn't officially a town at all. Stop reading your "facts" from a box of Cracker Jacks!

Wasn't North Charleston the suburbs of Charleston. Lots of 'locals' I meet were brought up in North Charleston. That would explain the absence of a downtown.

Haa!! One of my native Charlestonian friends told me this! He may have had a few drinks when he told me this bit of history.
