I'd second the Hibben in Belle Hall recommendation. Great subsection and gorgeous homes. Can be just as costly as Ion, but certainly a great neighborhood.
I'm also looking to move to Charleston from NY, (east end of Long Island). I'm 56, not ready to retire, just ready to get out of NY, and we love Charleston. Where to live? I want to spend about $ 350.00 and want something relatively new, and not too far from downtown. I prefer a development, but am open for suggestions. Where I live is very safe, just seasonal, and winters can be very isolated; don't want that anymore.

Sidenote: NY is leading all other states in losing tax money due to people leaving.

Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, James Island and John's Island would all fit the bill.
