Walterboro has beautiful old homes in the downtown area. It's about 30 minutes from Summerville. Here's a link to the Chamber of Commerce there.

Walterboro & Cottageville are both diamonds in the rough.
If done right, those towns can become very desirable. Craftsman style homes are available & "in town" there are some great buys if you can do the work yourself.

It's a place that HGTV would love...

If it's a first time teaching job and she needs work then I say go for it, but first she should do a search on greatschools.net to see what type of school she'll be teaching at.
And no I'm not from Walterboro but I do know people from there.

I'm from Walterboro/Cottageville. And there are many lovely areas to live in. It is comfortable, delightful historic town.

As a matter of fact, I spent all day today in Walterboro, visiting friends, ate at Duke's Barbeque, and went to the SC Artisan's Center. I love the historical downtown section...it reminds me very much of Summerville. There are some lovely old homes for sale there, that I would LOVE to get my hands on to renovate - if I had the time and money. Many are very well preserved already. There are also some mill-style cottages that would be perfect for a young person and there are also some nice neighborhoods nearby. Walterboro is right off of Interstate 95 so it is an easy drive to get to many places, such as Beaufort, Savannah, Florence, etc. It is also an hour from Charleston (taking Rt. 17), 30 minutes to Summerville, etc. There are plenty of places to eat and some shopping, but not much in town.

The public schools in Colleton County have had some problems, esp. the middle and high schools so I would definitely check them out first hand before accepting a teaching position there, if I were your friend (I teach in Charleston County on James Island). But they do need good teachers and your friend might just be instrumental in helping a school improve if she accepts the position!

Default Walterboro & Cottageville

Both are lovely areas to visit and live. Cottageville has a new $8.5 million elementary. Lots of nice properties at bargain rates. Walterboro also has many fine properties for sale.
