If I had unlimited funds, I wouldn't live on DI. Nowhere near the commercial development for shopping and amenities. It needs a Teeter, more shoppes, more restaurants, and those bridges need bike access. Also, best of luck to you when the bridges are closed d/t high winds.

Another honest question that I hope vexes no one ...

Does the smell over the Cooper River bridge (I've been told it's from the paper mill) ever reach the homes on Daniel Island by the golf courses and the commercial area where the Publix is?

I see ... what about Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island, does it make its way that far if the prevailing wind is strong enough and in that direction?

Thanks.

I live just east of 17, south of IOP and we rarely smell it. More likely to smell plough mud.

Unlimited funds -- Daniel Island not even in the top five.

Thanks moneill ... would that mean that in the historic part of MP it is very rare to get the paper mill smell?
I'm guessing Sullivan's Island is almost too far for it to carry?

And out of curiosity, what would be your top five if you don't mind me asking?

I generally don't mind the natural smells of the low country. Not that I enjoy the scent of plough mud but that's nature and I'm the visitor so I'm not in a position to complain. But all things being equal I'd rather not spend $1m+ on a house and be subjected to the smell of a rotten egg and decomposing carcass cocktail half the time, especially since it can be easily avoided with some due diligence. I guess one gets used to it after a while, but I'd rather avoid it than get used to it.

Daniel Island is great, but I think some of you are overestimating the cost of living there. The house prices aren't much higher (and in some cases are actually lower) per square foot than some of the more desirable neighborhoods in Mt. Pleasant. If you compare prices with somewhere like Old Village where you get a 1,500 square foot house for $500,000 it's a whole different story. I've said before that I think some of this misconception comes from comparing the wrong areas since Mt. Pleasant has way more options than Daniel Island. If you're comparing DI to Park West then it's going to seem way more expensive, whereas if you compare it to Old Village then it'll seem like a steal.

Old Village, Sullivans, Isle of Palm, Downtown Charleston or my last general top place to live, any deep water access lot with the backyard facing west and a pool. The latter would include lots in West Ashley.

If DI only consisted of the golf side it would for sure
rank up with KI,SOB,SI, but it does not,so not even close to the
aforementioned.

Got to give the DI Companys PR spin credit though.
So many folks think we are all millionaires here.
