hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! good luck. Its in your MIND! No seriously, Downtown Charleston, i guess. And Folly Beach i recommend. Youll have to do some searching, put it that way...
Downtown and the Hampton Park/Wagner Terraace area of the peninsula, the Byrnes Downs area West Ashley, Park Circle in N Charleston, Riverland Terrace on James Island and any of Sullivans, IOP or Folly Beach are the quick answers based on an assumption of what you mean by hipster. However if you are from anywhere in the South that isn't Atlanta or NOVA be ready for sticker shock.
Daniel Island and close in Mt Pleasant are nice but pretty suburban and not too diverse.
There really are nice places to live in all the diferent areas and a lot of people choose to live near work and then hit their preferred areas on weekends. If you do downtown make sure you are not picking an area that floods too easily or has too much crime. (And you'd be surprised at the diference between perception and reality in regards to those two.)
the words hipster and charleston also make me giggle a bit. but clsoest would be downtown. folly beach has more a surfer, laidback kinda feel.
but this would be based on the classical idea of hipster.
guess it depends how you define hip, lol.
I agree.....Charleston isn't exactly known for being "hip"...more like laid back, quaint, friendly, and historic. I also agree that Folly Beach might be what you are looking for in this area.
after living in nyc for years (albeit years ago) i was also looking for the similar things. i was really into the music and art scenes in the village and brooklyn. and i saw my fair share of "hipsters" and some would have considered me one. but i don't like labels like that. anyway... it's not charleston. every now and then you see a 18 year old college student walking down king street with creepers and skinny jeans... but the reality is it's a totally different kind of "hipster" then i imagine a 26 year old to be or want to be. bottom line is charleston is not a city one would classically define as hip. although it has it's other attributes..historic charm, laidback areas...but it prides it's self on it's historical beauty. it is not "modern" in terms of design and population. sure yeah there is a urban outfitters, lol, but any true hipster would scoff at that right? anyway... i still say check out downtown and see if it suits you. check out folly beach for more the surfer feel. see for yourself and go from there. it may be pretty different then you are hoping it to be.
