I have always lived in a rural town in Ohio and it really sucks. I feel it is so dead-end here. There isnt ANYTHING to do unless you drive an hour for an all-day trip, and then the choices are very limited and EXPENSIVE.
I am a single mom of an 11-yr-old and we just feel completely stuck and depressed here. There seems to be no single decent men, and many other problems here. We are both COMPLETELY bored and depressed in Ohio. Everything from the people's attitudes, to schools and employment is just not what we want. We are unhappy in this dreary place.
Visited Charleston and Summerville last summer, ( as my best friend moved there a year ago). She loves it. My child and I also loved it when we there, and we cried when we had to leave. It is just so beautiful and there was a feeling there that I cant describe, just a happiness and peace. I love the Civil War, plantations, the ocean, nostalgia, and all of it. Charleston was the most beautiful city I have seen. We Love the sun and warm weather. I wouldnt care if I NEVER saw snow again. I HATE really cold weather and Snow.
Considering moving to S. Carolina. I just am trying to figure out if it is a decent place for a single mom or is this just a delusion I am seeing ? Would it be affordable living for me ? What about job availability? And is it a good place for pre-teens and teenagers?
Any input is greatly appreciated !
We can give you help with a few more specifics.
What is your line of work?
What kind of housing are you looking for? Rent or own?
Do you want to continue your education?
The best schools for your money are Summerville and Goose Creek.
My line of work is either medical assisting in a physician office, or clerical/administrative assistant work. I prefer the 2nd line of work actually over the first. I am also skilled in human resource assistance, payroll, bookkeeping, etc.
I would like to continue my education, but am unsure of that at this time. Not sure if it is feasible, considering I would need to work and support myself and child as well.
Renting or owning either one. Probably would rent at first.
If you can help another one contemplating Summerville/Charleston---
I'm an IT/Help Desk Support person - so I'm guessing the main jobs are in Charleston---how long of a drive, with traffic is it from Summerville to Charleston? Is it basically Charleston where the office jobs are?
While reading some real estate online, North Charleston looked like it had some nice housing, but then I read a report about "safest cities" and North Charleston was on list of least safest cities? So does Charleston have a good side/bad side, which is why No. Charleston is on "worst city list"? Do people own homes in this area? Would Summerville be the better area to buy a home? But how long is the commute?
I have Christmas week off until 1/2/08, so may take a drive down to check it out---how warm is it in Charleston in Dec?
Your about right PM.
There are better sides of town & they cost more, go figure.
For IT/Help Desk Support, there's a large Verizon facility. Not much around it for living, but one can commute.
Temps should be in the 60's that week. C'mon down & have us show you around.

this is a link to the state info site regarding employment agencies, jobs and relocation. It might be a good place to start, also, the Trident hospital system is always hiring. They are expanding.
there are several realtors who visit this site. I am sure one will help you when it is time to think about housing.
When we moved here from the north it was so nice not to see all that cold gloominess for months on end. You will be happier here.
