Anyone ever have a similar issue? How did you resolve? This is in the Summerville area. Evidently the water company only deals with the meters so nothing they will do to help find it.

Have you called a plumber? Have you looked for the leak yourself? Did Summerville CPW come out to check the meter for leaks?

If a leak is not obvious, call a plumber immediately. It usually is not the water company's responsibility if it's on your side of the meter.

Look at your water meter. Depending on the type, it will have a sweep hand that moves even if the water running is ever so slight as in a leak. There should be no movement on the meter sweep hand, dial, wheel, whatever.

If no movement then no leak. Appeal the bill as a faulty reading.

This is right. Most meters have an indicator that will show if there is water flow. Make sure all water flow is turned off in your house and look at the meter. If water if flowing there will be some sort of indicator (I think mine is a spinning triangle).
I had the same issue about a year ago and found a copper pipe with a pinhole leak under the house. I also have a customer in Ion who's house is plumbed with Pex. A rat had chewed through it and it was spraying water all over the place soaking the insulation. Both of those fixes were pretty easy.

And the water company should have an appeal process for an accident of this sort if it is indeed a leak. They won't credit the whole thing but they should give you some kind of a deal - once the problem is identified and repaired. In Mt. Pleasant you have to submit a form with a receipt showing monies spent on a repair.

Thanks guys. Good to know about the appeals process.

Yep, we're working now on trying to find the leak.

If you have an irrigation system, that can often be the source of the leak. It can leak for a while without you knowing. Second the appeals process. We did this once before here in Mt P and they took off over 80% of the charge.

Yeah I did it once too in Mt. Pleasant. They have a rule that you have to provide a receipt to show you needed to do a repair. So make sure you keep receipts to show that you had to fix it - when you find it.

Are you using Dorchester County Water Authority? We had a leak in our irrigation system and our water bill quadrupled one month. I called them and explained the situation, and they comp'd us $300 on our bill (even though it wasn't there fault at all), it was a very nice gesture.

Wow, great deal! No, we're using CPW.
