Hello all!
DH and I would like to visit the beaches area in Charleston this weekend as the weather seems to be quite warm, and we desperately need a 2-day getaway from charlotte!
we have a senior dog about 80lb, and a 20-month old toddler.
This will be our first visit to the area. Could you please advice us on which beach to visit. At this time of the year, I hope all beaches would allow dogs on leash. At the same time, since we will be with a toddler, we don't want to be on a totally deserted beach/area. Would like to be at a beach with restaurants that are open this time of the year!
Could you also suggest places to stay and eat. Thanks so much!!

All of the beaches will allow dogs on leash at this time of year and I can't think of any restaurant that closes down for the winter anymore. Those days are past. I would look up VRBO.com and see what's out there that allows dogs. I think you'll find decent restaurants just about everywhere. There are probably more restaurants on Folly than on Sullivans or IOP but you would have good choices at any of them.

In short.... Pick a beach! Any beach!

Sullivan's Island beach is beautiful this time of year. We were there the other day and there were lots of folks out with their dogs. Although you won't be able to do it without a local permit we loved the fact that they have hours allotted to allow people to have their dogs off leash on the beach, it's one of the few places left where one can still do that (not a small factor for us choosing to live in the area), which is unfortunate because there's no happier dog that one with a whole beach to play on.

Hate to say it, but you'll have a much easier time finding good restaurants than you will finding places to stay that will allow your 80-pound dog. Good luck and hope you have a great visit!

thanks everyone for your inputs! The only place we could find who would accept our dog, with no sky-high charges, is red roof inn, mt pleasant. I know, not the best place to stay, but its just a short visit and hopefully we wont spend too much time in the room!
So, that leaves out folly beach coz that would be bit of a drive. sullivans island seems close by in the map. can anyone tell me how far is the beach from that red roof inn? Also, any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Nothing wrong with Red Roof, decent place....we have friends who have stayed there. Did you check the Sleep Inn Mt. P? They allow pretty large dog kids.

Folly is not a bad drive at all, especially this time of year but SI would be a little closer.

There are a couple of threads here on what to do during Christmas in the area, some great ideas in them. You will have a nice time, the weather looks nice.
