tmm5689--the commute can be "bad"! What I've noticed when leaving the Kiawah/Seabrook Island area is there seem to be a different work starting schedules at Kiawah--the early morning shift (I've seen a steady stream of traffic coming onto the islands around 6 AM) and the "normal" morning commute (7-9 am; this includes employees of the resort and contractors).
The "contractor commute" when you get onto John's Island can be a killer. Back to back, slow and go traffic. Blech!
Another hitch is gate access at Kiawah. This summer (around July 4th holiday) when my daughter was working over at Cassique, she said they received phone calls asking if there had been an accident. Apparently the Kiawah Island Parkway was backed up all the way to the Cassique entrance!
Finding a place to live downtown or on James Island/John's Island will cut your time. Don't overlook long term leases on Kiawah, Seabrook, or at Bohicket Marina. You might be able to find something affordable.
It is very much a South Carolina thing. I grew up in Myrtle Beach (my mother's family is Charleston) and we have a beach house in Murrells Inlet. Lots of my friends families that lived in the Dunes Club have Garden City Beach houses.
They are also vacation rentals.
We know folks in Beaufort & here in Charleston that have homes on Pawley's Island.
My wife drives to Kiawah from south of the IOP connector in Mt P for work once a week and she says it is an hour unless you are traveling at rush hour, which could make it significantly longer. Doing it every day would get old extremely fast and you would be putting an incredible amount of miles and wear and tear on your car for no reason.
