I find a lot of nice looking homes when I do a MLS search. We wont have a chance to go to the area for a couple weeks, but I really want to have a good idea of where I want to look before we get to SC and get lost in all the options.

I think White Gables is definitely worth a look. The houses are much closer together than I like personally.

I just visited the area last week and agree with the previous poster. The houses are very close together in White Gables. They have garages, but barely a driveway, no room for a car to park in the driveways.
The houses I visted were beautiful though. I just need a little more space than that, I don't want ot be able to reach out and touch my neighbor. |

That is the concept of having neighborhoods like that though. They are designed to bring people closer together to socialize more. The homes are closer to the sidewalks so when someone walks by and you are sitting on your front porch or stoop you will stop and chat. They are supposed to be reminiscent of neighborhoods from yesteryear when people actually interacted with one another instead of pulling into your garage, closing the door and running into your house never to be seen. It's not for everyone though, you either like that type of atmosphere or you don't. If you like to socialize and getting to know your neighbors and being involved it's a good choice. I have heard that White Gables is a rather tight-knit community. The homes in there are adorable.

I feel that White Gables is an underrated community. It appeals to a certain life style for sure. It is designed to bring people together and it does that quite well from what I can see.
I notice a certain type of person that lives there. I see people with either small children or nice dogs. All the time. I don't feel that it is a place to raise teenagers per se, but on the same token, it may very well be a great place to retire to. Close together? yup Nice amenities? yup GREAT DEALS?? oh yeah. Worth a look? Most definitely. jim |

SOunds good to me. We have a toddler and we are very interested in meeting people and developing a community. We are coming from the very social and active city of Portland, Oregon. We are super nervous about being lost in the flatlands of urban sprawl without a coffee shop or public event in site.

There are at least three here in S'ville not counting Starbucks. |

Is this similar to Celebration FLA?
I'm looking for a "neighborhood" down south and this may fit the ticket. Cannot travel just yet but want to narrow my search. Are there stores within walking distance? |

White Gables is built by Saussy Burbank and they seem like a very good company to deal with. They have good customer service and are a transparent builder. As far as location goes, not much is within walking distance.
There are some communities that Centex builds that has the traditional houses and some convenient locations that I believe some are within walking distance from a store. They are another very good builder with top notch customer service and transparent builder polices. There are some other good builders here, but no matter what, stay away from builders that do not allow meetings with the site foreman, allow walk-through's and phase inspections. These companies always have something to hide and it has nothing to do with "insurance" as they would have you believe. Even if you are buying an inventory home, find out what company policy is on this. Under no circumstance will I buy from an evasive builder. Not even a resale. There are too many good ones out there in too many nice neighborhoods for a consumer to ever put up with this. |
