We are a young family of 5. I am a stay at home mom, my husband drives a dump trailer an has a degree in heavy duty/ diesel mechanic. We have 3 boys ages 1month, 2 years and 4 years. We are coming from Long Island where we are "just getting by." I am looking for good schools and affordable housing. Also, if anyone has any work suggestions for my husband to look into and apply, that would be greatly appreciated. I have looke into Summerville and it seems affordable. Is it a decent area? Any and all help is appreciated, thanks.

Summerville is nice, Hanahan, Goose Creek all nice and affordable, but a bit of a drive from the beach. That is why they are more affordable than Mt. Pleasant for example.

Summerville in the Dorchester 2 school district is probably the best bang for the buck around Charleston. As Robynn said, it's a bit of a drive to the beaches (and downtown Charleston) but it's a good area. If you've been looking and it seems affordable then it will probably suit your needs.

And yes, the topic is a perennial hot one, so look through recent threads for more info or ask away!

I think Summerville is a great area for families. The schools there are good, but it's more of a small town feel. It is a separate city than Charleston and it is around 20 minutes away, so you need to keep that into account. However, you are close to North Charleston which has 2 nice malls, more shopping, movie theatres, major restaurants, etc. Summerville still has all you need for day-to-day life though.

Also, you'll have to drive further to the beach. It's close to beaches, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're the type who likes to go to the beach every single day or something.

I'll say that I never lived full time in Summerville. My husband had an apartment there for a year before we settled in Mt. Pleasant. There was nothing 'small town' about Summerville....more like suburban sprawl. Nothing wrong with that. I think it's a great area for families. It has everything you will need.

When we visited Summerville has our top choice town, I found it very underwhelming. The neighborhoods themselves were pretty nice, but once you leave your neighborhood, the town looks a bit run down. Violent crime is also creeping up from North Charleston. The schools are indeed fantastic, but the high school is in a bad part of town, so you should expect the occasional lock-down. With Mount Pleasant, even though you will get less house, it still could be a better quality of life. I wouldn't discount it, at least until you see it.

It's probably the Mt. P snobs. Summerville does have that small town feel, but it also has decent amount of restaurants and a nice movie theater.

Edit to add: Whenever I was researching online and hadn't been to the area yet, they all said you'll know when you get there... it's true!

100% agree. Unless you live in Summerville or are visting friends/family..etc. No one really goes there. It's in the middle of nowhere. There are plans for future development, but it is still under developed. I love that ppl are saying it's 30 mins from the beach (more like 1 hour realistically)... I'd pay money for someone to clock themselves leaving their home from summerville headed too Sullivans in 30 mins, yeah right. I live downtown, and just to get to Sullivan's, 8 miles, its a 15-20 min drive, with traffic lights and no traffic.

Resomod...I have no idea what you are talking about...in most of your posted message. Before I start, let me say that I *do* live in Summerville.

First of all, what you are calling "run down" is Summerville's historic downtown area, I presume. If not, I'd like to know what area you were referring to. Second, Summerville has TWO high schools, not ONE as you say. And "the occasional lockdown"?????? What the H___ are you talking about???????? Can you find me stats on how many lockdowns there have been in Summerville high schools?? Finally, "better quality of life" in Mt. Pleasant???? That is certainly subjective and may NOT be so for cerbonepartyof5.

Cerbonepartyof5....send me DMs with any questions you want answered about Summerville. I live here and will do my best to answer them!
