We will be coming for a visit in April. We are thinking of making the move from up North in the next year and want to check out the area. Also this little vacation will be my birthday present.
Where would be the best place to stay that is not to pricey but nice and clean, centrally located to check out downtown Charleston, Mount Pleasant and surrounding Neighborhoods..
We will be flying into Charlotte, NC.. Driving to Inmann (Spartanburg area) to leave me son with my in-laws. then drive to Charleston for a few days and go back to inmann and fly back from Charlotte.
First of all....why not fly into the Greenville-Spartanburg airport? If there are flights, it would be easier and cheaper. Charlotte-Douglas is one of the most expensive airports on the East Coast.
Our go to place is Sleep Inn, Mount Pleasant...Wingo Way. Safe & clean and easy access to everything.
Everytime we look, those flights are much more expensive to Greenville.. by a couple hundred!
$180 compared to $370! (American airlines.. Using points for one ticket)
Believe it or not, the Holiday Inn Express just off of 17 and Mathis Ferry in MP is not only very good value but it's very nice for a mid range hotel ... plus it is centrally located to pretty much everything in the Charleston area. If you want to spend a few extra bucks and stay in that neighborhood the Inn at I'on is very quaint, albeit slightly noisier. They recently had a fire at their restaurant so call to make sure the construction is finished by the time you're looking to visit.
There are some great hotels in historic Charleston, but obviously you pay a lot more for the walkability benefit.
Im thinking of one of the cheaper hotels since we will be out most of the time.. But we dont get away much so downtown would be cool to be able to walk to dinner.. etc.
If we were to stay downtown.. which area and places would I look at?

Wow! Those rates are ridiculous.
About the "cheaper" hotels downtown...there aren't really but your best bet may be the Days Inn on Meeting Street.
The Sleep Inn in Mount Pleasant (Wingo Way) is fairly new, centrally located, and has reasonable rates. Stayed they about two weeks ago for the 3rd time in the last 2 years.
Hotels on the Ashley side of the peninsula are cheaper, but not really walkable to the restaurant scene and Market/King/Bay. If you're open to a $5 flat rate (plus tip) taxi ride, then you're all set.
