"Roadside to Rusty

The former 17 North Roadside Kitchen, a restaurant near Wando High School in Mount Pleasant that's been shuttered for more than a year, is getting a makeover.
The Rusty Rudder, a bar and restaurant based in Cornelius, N.C., has bought the space at 3563 U.S. Highway 17. The restaurant plans to open its new South Carolina location this spring."

Maybe they can make it. It'll be the third restaurant that has opened there in the five years I've lived here. The last place, owned by the Indigo Road Restaurant Group, had plenty of money & even more experience (plus the following of a cult-like chef) to throw at it.

It's a tough location, even though the area is growing by leaps & bounds. I happen to LOVE where it is, but it's been a tough go for everyone so far.

Best wishes to them.

Also there's another one opening this Wednesday. The menu actually looks really good.

Rusty Rudder is in my neck of the woods - sort of - lets say I'm in the region. I do know the place though. What it's known for here is a place that has a great view (of the lake) and a hang out more than a restaurant. Or if you've been out boating, go there for a bite before you dock for the day. It's one of those places to go to hang out by the water, and while you're at it, maybe have something to eat, but don't have high expectations. You go for the view more than anything else. Here - there's not a whole heck of a lot of restaurants where you can get that view so you that's why they stay busy-ish - some times more than others - and seasons might include more than just spring and summer - it can include football and other sports .... or perhaps wet t-shirt contest season too. In Charleston - there are lots of places to get those water views so it won't be so unique. It will be interesting to see how well they do. I think of the place more as a bar that serves food than a restaurant.

It doesn't have to worry about being unique in that respect...water views at this location will be non-existent.

The only view they have is of Hwy17.

I am definitely going to try this place. They have old bay wings! Those are my favorite. Kickin Chicken took that flavor off their menu.

I was afraid of that (more about view than food).......The only potential is for some live music -- the outdoor area in the back of the restaurant is a great one to enjoy a drink, live music on a nice day.

The bbq place there was not special at all. We never went to 17 North as the menu never looked that great to us.

I went to 17 North a few times. The food was good. I loved the outdoor space at the back.
