Once called Central Mount Pleasant, the area is now being referred to as Midtown.
The developer, McAlister Development, plans to sell off parcels of the property to respective investors and builders for the completion of everything from retail to hotel accommodations.
A recent tour of the property brings fresh eyes to the development. According to Mills Buxton, a representative of the developer, the approved planned development allows the existing borrow pit (a man-made dirt mine) to be filled. The remaining portion of the pit is only a few feet deep and has incrementally been filled as the project has progressed. The pit will eventually be host to the core of the mixed-use village which will include office, retail and residential spaces centered on a public plaza. A new major road, Founders Way, connecting Midtown Boulevard to Rifle Range Road is almost complete. This will provide an alternative for residents looking to connect between Highway 17 and Rifle Range Road.
“We feel the Midtown name best reflects the mixed-use brand and key location in the heart of Mount Pleasant,” said Buxton. “It is a joint venture between McAlister Development and Greystar Real Estate Partners. Gateway elements to help communicate this brand are under design and scheduled to be installed in early 2015.”
The developer plans to align with various developers and builders for the completion of everything from residential, retail and office spaces, to hotel accommodations. The site is approved for a 65-foot-tall hotel that will be located near the MUSC building.
The central location of this project and its connectivity to Rifle Range Road, Bowman Road, Hungryneck Boulevard and I-526 should make traffic flow very efficiently and position it well to become a central business district.
The developer has worked with town staff to create a mixed-use center designed to support a pedestrian-oriented in-fill development. The primary roadways throughout the development were designed with many of the pedestrian features being retrofitted into other areas around town, such as on-street parking and wide, multi-purpose sidewalks as well as pedestrian-friendly streetscapes.

They have already started leasing in the apartments they started building in Midtown already. The changes are coming faster that you can blink! The closeness to I526 and central location in 29464 will make this a desirable community for sure. I'm trying to picture where the new road will be put in. Have you seen the site plans for the community as of yet?
Yes I have and the new road is roughed in -- you probably can walk it. You enter off Midtown behind the apartments and come out on Rifle Range right at Whiteside Elementary

Ahh ok, I know exactly where you're talking about now thanks.
The road begins just behind the apartments -- if you are traveling on Midtown towards Hungry Neck it is just before the apartments. It comes out on Rifle Range at Whitesides Elementary. You probably can walk it -- maybe even drive it if nobody is there.
I don't know -- I think that whole development got rethought out after The Boulevard and the whole Coleman upgrade was discussed. They really wanted more restaurans, shops, etc...but now the town has put it's focus on the Coleman thing...I see it being a great location for apartments, hotel and that's it. Restaurans/shops, etc won't survive there.
Does anyone know what they're putting where the old Baker dealership was in MP?
Adams body shop is moving up the street in preparation for the land to be developed.
Thanks.
