Keep in mind when these old cities were planned, it was based solely on river traffic and access to the ocean. If a 250 year old city today is easy to get around in, it’s by pure coincidence as automotive traffic wasn’t considered 250 years ago. Roads were a second thought. The majority of traffic came from the waterfront.
The streets were laid out at the beginning as part of the plan.
This whole place could use some street lights. James Island requires high beams to drive through. None of 526 in Mount Pleasant is lit which is odd for a populated metro area. Mathis Ferry is pitch black at night.
There at plenty of bigger metros/cities with no street lights on highways and normal streets.
We can hold ourselves to a higher standard than that. That's 3rd world nonsense.
526 had lights in North Chas, but they're not lit. That's even worse than putting them up in the first place.
I agree, but I-26 has them for a short distance in N. Chas. Never understood that. After you cross the Ashley bridge into downtown, they have lights, but most of them are out, and have been out for months. Like you said, can't even change a light bulb?
I really didn't notice how dark it was myself around here until I returned from UAE last year. All of their streets are almost over lit. But I suspect that's because they are loaded with money.

Well they certainly weren't spending that money on poo because Dubai finally started building a sewer system like 4 years ago.

The entire country is younger than most of the people on this thread and now they have sewers and lights. Cut them some slack.
Charleston was dumping raw sewage into the harbor as late as the 1970’s. Sewage treatment is a relatively new invention.
