We would like to plan a visit for a long weekend in order to scope out some of the different neighborhoods, their atmosphere and homes for sale. We are mainly looking in Summerville area, but will most likely drive to several other areas, as well. Can anyone recommend a centrally located decent hotel or even a general area that would be convenient to be-bop around? This will be our first visit, and we would like to see as much as we can in 3 days. Thanks!!

Charleston is really not that large, you can get around pretty much anywhere as long as you're not going during rush hour, in about 30 minutes. Maybe look at like International Blvd and around the airport. That's a good central location and right next to shopping, food, and Interstates. There's Holiday Inns, Hiltons, all the big names right off of International...

Be careful with Ashley Phosphate, a couple of those are really rough...

this might not be helpful at all, but if you're interested in summerville, why not look for an airbnb rental in that area.

usually there are options for staying in a room in a house (you'll be staying with a local family), or even renting out the whole house if you like your privacy. that way you get an actual neighborhood feel?

We did the same thing several years ago (checking out the neighborhoods, thinking of a move) and we stayed at a Holiday Inn right off the highway. It was a great place - they picked us up at the airport, got us a rental car and it was very conveniently located. It had a couple of restaurants in a shared parking lot for some late night dining too. We're still up here in the frozen north, unfortunately.

Not what I would call an up market area. Not dangerous but not interesting either.

I would suggest Mount Pleasant at the bottom of Rte 17 near the Cooper River Bridge. Easy to see all from Mount Pleasant to West Ashley, to Summerville and close to downtown Charleston.

Also, check out Groupon for hotel deals as the closer you get to downtown, the more expensive it gets. However, I'd much rather be in Mount Pleasant vs the Ashley Phosphate area. That part of town is just a far drive from everything it seems and some areas are sketchy.
