Ha. This thread makes me laugh. Between the desperate housewife spending her husband's paychecks at outlet malls and you defending the poor, defenseless mega national chains and big box stores. Just ridiculous.
Not defending chains. I want the market to decide.
Malls are a thing of the past, outlets like Tanger are the "new" malls. I read somewhere recently we are getting a Bass Pro Shops in 2015 somewhere up near Northwoods Mall. So, yes we are a little behind our neighbors, but I feel like we are still trying to improve the retail environment here. New stuff is coming into town all the time... I don't even shop any more, if I do I go to Town Center but I do most of my shopping online nowadays.
Well said, I like where the "Tanger" outlet is located. I hate the aesthetics of Columbia and Greenville. Please for the love of "insert your deity" don't follow Columbia and Greenville. I like the way Charleston tries to hide the "Commercial Chains" on 526. Ashley phosphate exit to Aviation is the not pretty but i can deal with that.
There's nothing wrong with either of those restraunts.
Another classy comment
Absolutely nothing wrong with those restaurants but they are not perceived as classy, It was in reference to the comment that chain restaurants aren't as trashy as independents.
I think you read way more in my statement than what I wrote.

Outback and Olive Garden are not exactly what I would call upmarket nor unique. Neither is special but they will suffice especially as one can get a drink so that does makes the food better..........LOL
One of the things I love most when I visit Charleston are all of the fantastic, non-chain options in which to dine! Living in the Redneck Riviera, and being a self proclaimed 'foodie' is rough. I understand the college budget issue, but certainly there are some inexpensive options available?
A chain restaurant is usually a formula exterior and interior, along with the formula food. Their 'look' is rarely something to be remembered. It is what it is. A chain is a chain by the nature it serves the SAME food in the SAME way. Use to be that chains were the safe bet when traveling because you knew what you were getting. With the internet, smart phones and yahoo, yelp, urbanshoop, google, etc., etc., etc., (channeling my best Yul Brenner)......its fun to try non-chain when visiting. As we head out on our 1500 road trip, I'll be enjoying one of our fave chains.
