My wife and I are contemplating a move to the Mount Pleasant area. We are tired of the cold winters that are only getting worse and are looking for a more comfortable climate. After much searching online the Charleston area has jumped out at us. I have read that jobs in this area are tough to come by. My wife is in the mortgage industry and I am in building material sales. I know there are other threads on here but they seem to conflict each other a little. Can anybody shed a little light on the job possibilities for us? Thanks in advance.
Everyone on this forum will tell you to secure a job before moving here. The jobs are extremely competitive, with so many local people looking for jobs AND people who want to move here who are looking for jobs. Even so, with the influx of people coming here, I wouldn't think that either of you would have a problem securing employment....lots of building here along with folks buying homes. Just monitor the job boards. Also, your wife should contact some of the mortgage depts. in banks here to ask if they are hiring. Similarly, you should personally contact some of the business related to your line of work.
Thanks for the input. I have the Indeed app which shows there are opportunities there but I needed some insight into the competitiveness of the market. I will check out the link also. Again, thanks for the help!
Not to discourage you but more to set a proper level of expectation. Some of the most sought after hourly jobs in the Charleston area are with Boeing. They pay about $17 per hour for this type worker. These are consider good paying, hourly jobs in the area.
That is a pretty drastic difference coming from the DC metro are where I am at now. Honestly the housing prices in Mt. P aren't that different from up here yet the pay scale has a huge difference. I appreciate your input johngolf. I looked at a lot of forums and this one seemed to have the best and most honest input. I want to do my research before making a jump so I will take all the honest input I can get!
Charleston is a very funny place. The pay is well under cost of living, and the gap is getting worse with higher property values and rents. When you live here, you pay for convenience. That means living downtown/next to the beaches are the most costly, but further out costs are more reasonable (but you have to deal with awful commutes).
Obviously there are exceptions, but the majority of people live under 50k household salaries (paycheck to paycheck).
For building material sales: look up 84 lumber, southern lumber & millwork.
Chs2014, I'm starting to notice what you are saying about the cost of living gap the more I look into it. This seems like a recipe for disaster. I guess being this close to DC the govt kind of keeps things going around here. Mt P seems like such an upscale are for the lower wages, how does that work?
Well this is just theory: But about 15 years ago Mt. Pleasant was affordable (homes were well under 200k). It use to be a quiet town, and a lot of mom and pop shops. Growth caught on, and supply/demand took place, driving everything up. So what I assume is the majority of the residents bought cheap and all the new money transplants can afford it.
Similar to what I said in another post. Your Doctor will live in Mount Pleasant. His nurse will live in West Ashley. Your barber will live in Summerville.
