King's Grant is pretty too. I would not consider either of these areas due to the Oakbrook area congestion, but there are some beautiful homes and, depending on where you are coming from, the faster pace might not bother you. I find both neighborhoods have a lot of retirees. They are in the midst of expanding Dorchester road too, which may ease the traffic. It can be a killer at peak hours.
Yes I think when they finish Dorchester Rd it will help a good bit. Not sure what the schedule is on that but it's got to be getting pretty close!
I agree about both neighborhoods having more elderly... that's what I meant when I said "not as many kids as the newer neighborhoods". As long as there's enough kids, I think a good mix of ages is better for children to be around as they're growing up.
To the OP- I live in Cane Bay, and I believe that Magnolia (Dan Ryan builders) does have the 3 car garages. Look up Nexton and Carnes Crossroads as well- what is your time frame for moving? You guys should take a weekend trip down to check out the place

I am actually coming down with my daughter in a few weeks. I am staying on Johns Island but will be touring Summerville all weekend. I am going to look at Canes Bay, Nexton and Carnes Crossroads. Any other suggestions while I am there? Thank you!
Cool, hope you enjoy your trip down here! Just a heads up that the houses at Nexton will be ready in 2015. Due disclosure since you stated you have kids, that Cane Bay Elementary's 4th grade will be in trailers till Nexton Elementary is built (also in 2015).
I can't think of any other master planned neighborhoods in Summerville off the top of my head. I used to live in Oakbrook area and really loved it- the congestion (and now flooding!) is kinda ridiculous but like a poster said above, the widening of Dorch Rd will help(whenever that will get completed :P )
Now, even though there are lots of young families in Cane Bay, there are lots of older retirees as well, and I feel like my daughter is around a mix of people.
Have you thought about renting before you buy? There are so many new developments within CB itself that are coming up in time for next year (Crescent Homes, Lakes at Cane Bay, Beazer will be fall of this year I think).
Carne's crossing, it's a rather large neighborhood going up near the intersection of 17a and St James ave. It's not as large as Nexton of course but still probably a few hundred homes. As of March of this year its mostly just a large church and a dozen or so houses.
Yeah, no one picked up on that. OP basically said he's moving down on a "whim", but can cashflow a 275k home? Well ok, but why move anywhere on a "whim"? Just not a smart thing to do, especially in this economy. OP needs to understand the cost of living here is more comparable to Pennsylvania or Upstate NY, not the rest of SC, which costs substantially less.
