I'm planning to relocate from Indiana to SC. I'm looking at (1) Lexington, Irmo, Chapin in the Columbia area and (2) Goose Creek, Summerville, Moncks Corner in the Charleston area. The Charleston area might be a few degrees warmer in winter, which is a slight edge.
The only reason I want to relocate is that I'm tired of the Midwestern winters. Else, I would love to duplicate what I have now. Nice house; quiet, safe neighborhood with mature trees; 7-8 minute drive to the beach (Lake Michigan); very convenient shopping. I want to look out my window and see trees, not the clear-cut grounds of a subdivision. I want to be able to grab a thermos of coffee and take a short drive to some relaxing location: lake, river, park, anything quiet and scenic. My housing price point is around $225K (not over $250K). Just from searching online, it seems like the Oakley / Pimlico area of Moncks Corner might be a possibility. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Probably the big decision is how close to the ocean do you want to be. You can't get 7-8 minutes to an ocean beach at your price point. Moncks Corner is good if you want to be near the lake. John's Island might be a possibility.
I was also deciding between the same areas as you when I moved down here. I chose the Charleston area over the Columbia area because I wanted to be nearer the ocean and I like downtown Charleston better than downtown Columbia.
The suburbs are pretty similar between the 2 areas imo.
If water proximity is important to you ... the Moncks Corner suggestion works well at your budget .... I would recommend Pinopolis as a terrific area adjacent to Moncks .... both downtown Charleston and the ocean beaches are about an hour away... an easy daytrip.
Some other communities to consider would be Holly Hill and Vance (5 to 10 minutes to Lake Marion)
Bonneau (on Lake Moultrie)
John's Island still has plenty of big lots with mature trees, although acreage is getting pretty pricey there now. (Stono River)
Hollywood and Meggett (Wadmalaw Sound)
McClellanville (Muddy Bay)
Edisto Island (Edisto River/Beach)
All of these will have a "country" feel, be fairly close to water, and all have active listings for $225,000 or less.
