Question: Are you from Charleston, or even the United States? Is it common for people in Charleston to spell the word "color" with a "u"? I always that was the way people from England and Australia spelled that word. Americans were not taught that way.
It's best to just report the trolls and move on.

We're looking for a family fun suburban area with a good public school district.

Rental home $1300 and under. (I have no idea if that's a good price range for this area or what we could get. We're open to apartment/condo/townhome)

We're also an interracial family - my daughter (age 7) was born/adopted from Guatemala.. Is racism/her safety something that I need to be concerned about?

My significant other would be working in Charleston - so commuting.

Thanks all.

A question for all folks who are relocating from the North East and ask about race. What is your perception of your current location as it applies to race relations? I ask this as a former Northeast resident. Do you people seriously view the North East as a bastion of cultural diversity and non-segregation? NYC ,Nassau County NY, Bridgeport CT,Hartford CT, on up to Boston, these areas.

Okay I'll just say it. Based on experience Charleston SC is more conducive to an interracial family than most areas in the Northeast excluding DC.

Jason is absolutely correct.. Charleston area school districts are amongst the most non-segregated school districts in the country and they try hard to keep it that way.

This is just from my personal experience but some of the most racially intolerant people I've ever met were from the northeast. I know this doesn't represent every person who lives/is from the north but that's just what I experienced.

This is due to ethnic aspects as well, along Southern states moving to county school districts to integrate the school systems. The latter caught on as people saw a decrease in taxation/service costs related to this move.

For the last five years, my children have attended school in a NY "enlarged" school district, which was originally created to eliminate segregation, which it has. The breakdown now in this day and age is 26% white, 27% black, 44% hispanic, 2% asian.

Is there racism? Heck, yeah. Mostly from the parents, though.

And if you ask me who the best students are, I'd say hispanic, hands down. Most have two caring loving parents who hold their kids' feet to the fire, and expect them to succeed.

Folks down here tend to keep their kids away from those who are "poor", not because of their skin color. People of like tax brackets tend to hang around the same.

I've seen more interracial couples/families here than I ever did in Upstate NY!

They are in Upstate NY too. It may have been due to where you lived, but they are there as well. Charleston has a pretty big military presence and those familiar with the military, IR couples are common on military bases and in nearby towns.
